Thanks for setting this up. I've just checked my tradee's list and will be walking around today - the only day we're NOT supposed to get rain this week -

PS - Jade Cascade was looking great - until the dang deer decided they liked it too But it's making a great return.
We had frost and it was probably down to ~30 at ground level where the hostas are. I'm hoping that the rain we had yesterday and Friday helped keep things ok, it was still pretty wet last night and there was a slight bit of wind. My birdbath in the main hosta garden was not frozen, while the one in ...
I forgot to add my other natural method - house wrens! I have 3 wren houses throughout my yard - 2 hang over hosta beds. Wrens love slugs, and when they have babies to feed, they are very busy getting slugs... Mr. Wren is out there sitting on the house singing away right now. I just saw in one of my...
I generally just leave them. Yes, usually they are just plain ole green hostas, but you never know when you might have culled a neat one. I figure if they can make it through the summer as well as winter and re-appear the following spring you might be rewarded. This week while weeding I re-found mys...
A sad day in the hosta world for sure. I met George several years ago at a convention and had some excellent conversations. He will be missed. My condolences to his family.
A couple years ago I read in Fine Gardening that dryer lint ringed around the base of the plant helps. I tried it last year on a couple plants that are serious slug snacks and it did seem to work, so I will be trying it on more this year. Supposely the fibrous lint prevents them forming the slime tr...
Things seem ok here on first glance. I use the bleeding hearts as well as ferns as an indicator too - and those are fine. I think it was about 32 this am. I'm hoping the light wind helped. They're talking a freeze warning again tonight, as well as a frost advisory tomorrow night, but haven't issued ...
I've just come in from covering what I can - of course it's windy & cloudy all day and then around sundown the clearing line shows from the west and the winds die down. Just saw the weather, they're saying 30 degrees in town, in the upper 20's outside. Oh I hope the wind helps keep things mixed up. ...
I have ordered some from Chris - Celestial Paradise Backstage Sum of All Atlantis Millennium Niagara Falls Pandora's Box I already have NF, but it is quickly becoming one of my favorites and I have just the spot for this one. I'm still working on an order from Naylor too... but need to pick one or 2...
Thanks for the iron phosphate info - I have been using them since I have dogs, and a new puppy arrives in 2 weeks, who will have to learn like the others to stay out of the gardens. I will for sure be reading up further on this. Though as Steg said, pets like beer - I had a dog in grad school who wo...
Chris - I think it might be the amount of water. I've had the same experience, but never really made that connection until reading this post - I have 2 Aphrodite. One is in an area that always gets lots of water as it's right under some hanging plants that get watered in addition to rain - the hosta...
I'll put it on the list for this weekend, and if it gets done, great, if not, it's on the move list for spring. I agree Chris - Dee's Golden Jewel is cool on it's own, I have another set of JOTN & Dee because they came that way in the pot a couple years ago - that JOTN hasn't reverted since and it q...
I have a fairly large Jewel of the Nile. However, it's starting to revert to Dee's Golden Jewel, probably about 1/3 reverted. Should I dig it up and divide it now or wait until next spring ?
1. How did you get your start into the hosta world? Moved into this house 12 years ago - mostly shade or dappled shade, clay soil (which I amend). Hostas work and when I travelled didn't have to worry about if they would croak. 2. What features are you the most attracted to in a hosta? Bright gold (...
My rain gauge says over 3" of rain. I have a lot of happy hostas and other plants and DH's lawn looks better. Now I have no excuse to try doing some weeding - they'll come out much easier now. It would have been very sad with no rain and then 90+ weather tomorrow.
I hear you Chris! I think there's a dome over our part of Michigan - storms go south, north, east - well you get the idea. I've seen radar which looked like almost a certain downpour evaporate before it got here. I've never lost a hosta to drought until this year (mother nature & I are the sprinkler...
WOW!! Thanks for sharing. I can't wait for my teeny tiny Continental Divide from Olga's last year to get big in a couple or more years.
The fence detail was very helpful too!
Here's from day 2: Enjoy! http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=2024817&id=1527527679&l=14dbb39342 Linda - yes, thanks to you & Lynn - Rose campion are the flowers I was looking for the name of - they were in about every garden from day 1 of tours - in the sun, total shade, part shade... and looked ...
