FINALLY bloom in the Northland!

Post by laurief »

I am well used to loooooong northern winters, but this interminably slow, cold, bloomless spring has REALLY been working my nerves! Until yesterday, that is.

I FINALLY HAVE IRIS BLOOM!!!!! Four littleuns opened yesterday for me. Three are MDBs (miniature dwarf bearded), and the fourth is an SDB (standard dwarf bearded). Here they are ...

'Blue Doll' is an historic MDB. You may notice in this pic that the far lefthand bloom caught just the slightest hint of RoundUp drift when I sprayed about a month ago (the foliage was barely an inch high AND I covered the plant before spraying!).

Personally, I love Alpine Lake with the color breaking, but I know that it makes Dorothy Willott (the hybridizer) cringe when she sees pics of her baby looking like that.

My irises are blooming so fast and furious now that I barely have time to run around taking pics. With these littleuns, depending on the weather, sometimes there's only an hour or two when they really look their best. Sometimes there are NO hours when they're at their best! So I'm in and out of the iris beds all day trying to capture the nicest possible "pose" for each flower. Rainy conditions sure don't help, and we're supposed to be rainy all week! Ugh! Some of my maiden bloomers only give me one or two flowers, and if they open in the rain, so much for decent pics. :-(

Anyhow, I've got a lot of pics sitting in my computer now that I haven't had time to prepare for posting. I'll give you 12 more tonight, though. Starting with ...

I planted this particular rhizome in a full sun bed last summer, and to my surprise, this flower is significantly lighter purple than the clump from which the rz was taken in my less sunny bed. I don't know if it's the extra sunlight or a different soil chemistry that makes the difference, but I prefer the darker, richer purple this cv demonstrates in the less sunny bed.
