Re: Sagae and friends today . . .
Your Sagae is really nice. Mine never gets that big - must be not enough sun. Thanks for the post. Thank you! To be fair, I should let you know that this was planted as a 1 eye plant in 2003. I spread 18 inches depth of composted horse manure before planting this bed. Great hostas take time, but I ...

Sagae and friends today . . .
Long time no post. Here's the southeast garden bed. Sagae, blue umbrellas, sum and substance, super nova, mistress maybel. It's time to do some more moving and maintenance to the bed.

I think TC is good thing...in concept...and will be a great thing once they work out how to make sure what the vendors themselves promise is what we get. If they know 10% (or more) of their plants are “different”, they SHOULD NOT advertise that they are the same and then no one would ever be disapp...

Re: TC Disappointed or not
Before anyone jumps me about this question, my point is to look to understand what to expect. Making a couple of statements I believe; Hosta are given to sporting, which of course is one of the charms of hosta. TC (tissue culture) hosta are little divisions subject to sporting or in the case of the...

Alexa, the HVX was not because of TC but mass production of field grown hostas. TC is in sterile conditions and they won't start new ones with contaminated equipment. I think what Alexa was suggesting is that some TC's have been created from virused hosta tissue (in TC labs that were not testing th...

Oh, Linda, there you go overreacting again. I told you and Jamie both that the Hosta would be just fine if you applied a daily poultice of Calamine lotion and didn't scratch the spots. At least it is good to see that the spots have not settled out to the edges, though. I hate it when my spotted bree...

I am looking at putting in an irrigation system at a building where my wife will be having her business. The grounds have some really nice raised beds with fantastic, mature vining plants that grow up on a trellis (Trumpet Vine [Campis], Wisteria, Climbing Hydrangea, etc.) and some various perennial...

Whew, let's end this thread here now that we have a warm fuzzy moment, shall we? At the risk of leaving anyone to believe we (you and I) have any part of a warm fuzzy moment. Re-read my words directly and empathetically my simple feeling is that you are eat up with CS. Aw, Butch, what an ugly thing...

Linda...I'm surprised at you silly! The solution is so simple. All you have to do is feed the salamanders Alfalfa meal, than save it's droppings and plant them with your hostas. By the way, I know you're pulling the wool over our eyes because you successfully experimented with Salamander Poop alrea...

As for the use of "chemical" fertilizers it has been demonstrated countless times that plants are not selective about the sources of the elements they need. If the element in question is available in a form the plant can use, it will use it - a simple truth known to farmers everywhere. The proof is...

I agree with Bill's original statement, and think he said exactly what he meant. If you till under a tree where you are about to plant a hosta, you cut out the tree roots in that area. Yes, they may come back, but you get about a 2 year jump on the tree so that the hosta can gain some footing. Anoth...

On the other hand those snakes keep the rodent population down in the garden! They're welcome in my garden anytime as long as I don't step on them :D MollyD I can't argue with that, Molly (although my wife may not agree)! Believe it or not, I have never seen a snake in my yard since I've been in my...

http://www.extension.umn.edu/projects/yardandgarden/diagnostics/hosta-s.html I think this is the link you are looking for. It says "CROWN ROT (Occurs occasionally) Shoots wilt suddenly, stems are mushy. Brown to tan mustard-seed-like sclerotia can be seen on soil and infected area." I don't think it...
