This is easier said than done, but you might me able to get a decent pic of it if you shoot it through a magnifying glass. I haven't seen it before on hostas, but there is a soft bodied brown scale that is frequently showing up here in Ohio on all kinds of plants, both woody and herbaceous. When the...

Your pic looks just like my Hyacinthinas. Jade Beauty is listed as an all green sport of Francee. Check out the one pic of it at the Hosta Library and compare it to your Revolution sport. That picture shows a rounded leaf. I picked up a Jade Beauty cheap last fall because it was showing an interesti...

So many great trees....and so few years to grow them! I love any beech, and many of the oaks, but they can be painfully slow. For a quick growing tree, search out a Katsuratree (Cercidiphyllum japonicum). To quote Michael Dirr in his book Manual of Woody Landscape Plants: "If I could use only one tr...

I think Mohawk is one of the best of the fragrant ones for foliage and aroma, but it sounds like you got V. lantana---probably "Mohican".

I like your setup. What kind of fittings did you use for the spigots and the connectors between barrels...and where did you get them?

I posed this question of seed transmission to a plant pathologist friend of mine. He directed me to the same abstract John posted the link for, and added: The generalized answer is "yes to seed transmission" and "no to pollen transmission". I'll qualify that by saying I'm not sure anyone has looked ...

Those galls are most likely caused by the Phomopsis fungus. There is no known control measure, but it rarely kills a plant. You can prune out galls (sterilizing pruners between cuts) if you don't like the appearance.

And soon to be showing up at a hosta seller near you: Cathedral Windows. It is, I believe, a tetraploid sport of Stained Glass. I saw a few forced for the Cleveland Flower & Garden show last month. Very impressive!

Its difficult to see for sure, but the first pic could be impatiens necrotic spot virus. I don't know much about that virus, but it has a wide host range (not just hostas). Like Chris said, I would get both of them out of there ASAP.

The one gardener I know growing it has had it about 3 years and it was about 3.5 ft tall this summer, and indeed is a striking plant. I just haven't been able to convince myself to try it because of its heritage.

I don't know about it in zone 4, but in zone 5 it grows and survives fine, but is much more restrained and less aggressive than its green cousin, and I have not seen volunteer seedlings popping up around it. I would plant it in a slightly sheltered location, give it excellent drainage, and hope it d...

The first one looks like a shaggy inkcap, which is edible if you pick them early, but be careful because there are poisonous lookalikes. The 2nd is a fascinating one with a long history called fly agaric. Most guides list it as poisonous, and it can be to small animals, but it is known for it's psyc...

Sorry to hear this Chris. Are these all new batches you got in this year? If so then the Dutch certainly haven't cleaned up their act yet, but I assume you should be able to get credit for those. How many of your samples were showing visual symptoms? Also, this Whirlwind sample is interesting. Did t...
