Re: Scale? On white pine

That is not a scale, but pine bark adelgid. Adelgids are similar to aphids. Horticultural oil is very safe and effective on this pest. Targeted at the trunk it could probably be used now. They have part of their life cycle out by the buds and new growth so you may miss a few now if you just spray th...

Re: Pest identification and treatment help, please!

Compare it to cottony maple scale, or maybe cottony cushion scale. Either way, the hardest part about control is getting an insecticide through the cottony mass to the insect's body. They are probably still young enough to make it happen with many off the shelf insecticides. If not you may have to u...

Re: Hosta of the Day - 'Cynthia'

I haven't been around much to respond to this, but I would like to extend the offer of testing to any of the other varieties that show odd mottling/markings...such as Filagree, etc.

If it is alright Ed, I will send you a PM about this.

Re: Hosta of the Day - 'Cynthia'

I have had this hosta tested previously for HVX and it always came back negative. Last May I submitted it for testing in a panel of 14 different viruses. It came back positive for Cucumber Mosaic Virus (CMV) by ELISA testing. That was confirmed by further PCR testing as well. It has been in my garde...

Re: Sport of Hosta 'Liberty' with a viridescent margin

Well it certainly isn't ugly even now, and I like hostas that change throughout the season, so it might have possibilities. I think what it needs to sell well is a catchy political name....you know...something about our disappearing freedoms (liberties).

Re: i need ideas...

Red oak is certainly on of the best choices for size, rate, and deep root system (for hostas underneath), but a lesser known one that is an up and comer is sawtooth oak, Quercus acutissima. It is faster growing than red oak. Also dawn redwood, and I would not be without a Katsuratree (Cercidiphyllum...

Re: Help- What to do about weevils

I don't know about your pesticide laws, but I would think you should be able to get beneficial nematodes which can greatly reduce numbers, if not eliminate weevil populations. I know a couple gardeners who have used products from Gardens Alive with excellent success. Some studies have shown mixed re...

Re: what to plant on a steep embankment

Sedums are a primary component of many live roof formulations and this would be a similar type application where little to no maintenance is desired, and they can look nice too. Although if it was mine, I would probably add an area or 2 of grasses such as the switch grasses or Little Bluestem grass.

Re: Are daylilies of unknown parentage taboo?

I would get the opinion of professional hybridizers on it. There are 2 hybridizers and official Hem Society display gardens within 8 miles of my house, so if you send me a piece of it I can take it to them and see what they have to say. Hahaha.

Be careful what you wish for. Not many couples can successfully garden together. If my wife suddenly took an interest in the gardens and tried to impose her ideas, she may not be my wife for long.

Re: What killed my hosta?

Now we have to worry about crows too? Thanks KHT. harvest122, what you may be experiencing when you find a mushy crown is bacterial soft rot. Next time you find one, give it a good whiff and if it smells like dead fish, then you know it has been hit by bsr. This is the same disease that turns iris r...

It sure looks like Ghost Spirit to me, but a lot of plants have been sold with that name that have a very white center. I think those have been renamed as Ghostmaster.

Re: NOID

When you are repotting you may want to look for weevil grubs, as there has been feeding from adult black vine weevils on the foliage.
