what looks good yet?

Here in Appleton WI (zone 4) my H. Junes and H.Devon Greens and Love Pat look like it's still June. Dark Star, Queen Josephine , Joseph and Emerald tiara are all still quite good. I have several Pearl Lakes and the ones in shade are good yet too, the others are starting to fade. Sure wish everything...

Re: Lancifolia or cathayana

I live in the dark ages and still use a camera with film.I picked a bloom just now and it has a light red cast, more like the top pic but not quite as dark. My original plant was give to me 30 year ago by a neighbor that didn't think names were necessary. It multiplied rapidly, not by stolons. that'...

Re: Lancifolia or cathayana

I never noticed pods on my Lancefolia but have had a few seedlings over the years. This was in a spot that had only Lancefolias.

Hosta for sun

Some have asked about hostas for sun,,the one that has beat all others for me after I cut down a Amur maple(roots taking over) Is DARWIN STANDARD. It is beautiful yet and I've only watered once (broken arm) in spite of a very dry August and Sept. I should mention no slug nibbles either. Charlene

Mosquitos/slugs

Got this in a email today, don;t know if it works, but if it does I wonder what it would do for slugs. Mosquito Spray...Worth a try. I was at a deck party awhile back, and the bugs were having a ball biting everyone. A man at the party sprayed the lawn and deck floor with Listerine, and the little d...

"Sara"

I thought I'd lost my "Sara" by Kuk but today I found a light green looking like it might be turning yellow in the area it should be in. Could this be "Sara"? Can anyone compare "Sara" to "Prairie Fire", that is size, color, waviness, slug resitance? While we're at it is "Sara's Sensation" easy or h...

"Black Satin" versus Lakeside Black Satin

When I looked up Black Mountain in the H. Library I came across "Black Satin". Does anyone have it? Can you compare it to Lakeside Black satin? I have LBS and have had nothing but trouble with it. I keep moving it around( part shade full shade, and everything in between.) When my daughter's cat died...

dark greens

I agree,Second Wind is a beautiful dark green, and mine gets a lot of sun. Potomac Pride might be darker but it's form isn't as pretty. Devon Green (Canadian Sheild) has a very pretty form, a pretty dark green in the shade, lightens with sun, one I have in nearly full sun has a olive cast. Ventricos...

need ID

A friend showed me a hosta that he's lost the label for. The center is white with a dark green border and the leaf narrower than Thunderbolt. The white center is totally shredded lengthwise, like someone took a razor blade to it. Are there any that behave this way on a regular basis? ckp

Darwin Standard

If you want a beautiful tough hosta Darwin S. is it. We cut down a nasty small Amur Maple because of it's roots on a cool Sunday the middle of last June. The next day a heat wave started from which we little relief until recently. All survived after frying, some down right crispy. Darwin though, had...
