I have done a water aerobics class the last 3 winters. The woman who leads it is in her 80s and puts this 55 year old to shame in endurance. The exercise has really helped tone all my muscles and helps keep my energy level up in the winter, a season when it always tended to be low. Exercising in the...

Whew, all this talk of walking! It's getting to be the time of year when morning LOWS here are near 80 degrees. I do get a lot more exercise than I used to and I find it's easier to do more all the time. I like this part of the forums, I have been lurking here for a while now. My weight loss has bee...

Speaking of old catalogs and Iris, we have this one down the road a piece. The house it's at must be 60 to 70 years old, but of course we have no idea when this was planted. The clump is about 5 feet around and we are on friendly terms with the owner, so I am hoping to see this bloom in our garden n...

My want list of Hostas is anything that will withstand the heat later in the year. I have had some of the Hosta in the ground for 8 or 9 years now and if I can keep them watered and relatively cool in the late Summer, it's OK and they have survived. Many of the named Hostas I have listed I bought th...

Very interesting info. I have been out of the retail nursery business since leaving Oregon and am just now getting re-educated.

We garden under big old Oaks on about 1 acre of ground (minus the space taken up by Ken's peafowl pens). It has been a challenge to find suitably sunny spots for some of the plants. Ken has a large collection of Daylilies, but most of them lost their tags, or did not come to him with names. I will t...

Thank You! I love the www, I learn something new nearly every day. I spent the first 43 years of my life in western Oregon, with a strong family background in gardening, and even went back to school in my 30s to take a degree in horticulture. Foliar nematodes are new information to me! When I moved ...

Too Much Work on 'Maggi's Farm' (Maggidew)

This seems to be an excellent place to keep track of what we have going here at 'the Farm'. Ken (DH) has been collecting Bananas and various Elephant Ears (Alocasia, Colocasia and Xanthosoma). I have been collecting Toad Lilies, Hostas and Hellebores (a very young Hellebore collection of seedlings a...

This is a little on the 'dry' and academic side of things, but it does give a clear description of the types of nematodes, the damage they do and how they do it, and how to best control parasitic nematodes.

840 milligrams is 35% of the recommended daily allowance (RDA) of sodium (per serving) in a 'normal' diet. Even for a person who is under no sodium restrictions this is a pretty high sodium content.

For those of us on a reduced sodium intake, this is WAY too high.

Well, they definitely surpassed all expectations here. OK, I will try planting them out and see what happens with them.

But then, when we start potting up the new 'crop' of seedlings this year, what am I supposed to do with them? - LOL!

Hellebore Seedlings

Our friend Joan has many different Hellebores in her garden and last year she gave us these seedlings. There are 66 of them in 5" square pots. Pic #1 I have chosen 12 to keep and plant (flat in lower left corner of Pic #1), I am curious to see what sort of blooms they will have, being natural crosse...
