I am thoroughly enjoying your musings, as well as being able to attach a bit of history to each hosta. Thank you for your NPOTDs.

It is reassuring to know that someone else goes out to their gardens and just stares at all those magnificient leaves. And now with all these digital cameras, we can all stare at each others' plants. Cool. And thank you.

OBL replaced a disappointing Frances Williams in my yard too. She's a beauty with her lovely white flowers.

Freezing Temps in the Upper MidWest tonite...

 What do you folks do when this happens? Aren't most of your hostas too big to cover with a bucket? This is just awful. Do the leafed out trees help keep the frost away? Will the frost bitten plants put out more leaves, like they do when accidentally mowed?

I think thrips too when I see those tiny dots of damage. My collection of hosta is small enough that I can use a spray bottle of an insecticide that has pyrethrins as it's active ingredient. That works for me.

Please accept my deepest condolences. She was truly a beauty. I keep a tab in the back of my Hosta Binder marked "RIP" Rest in Peace. It has photos of those that didn't come back. Mine, however, are varieties that I could replace if I found I couldn't live without them. Yours, on the other hand are ...

Thank you for posting those pics. It is nice to see the nursery home of many of my hostas. No wonder Chris ships such healthy, beautiful plants. And speaking of beautiful plants, is the single plant photo Touch of Class?

What a wonderful hosta. I looks like its name, and is so different from the rest. My first one died and I decided that I had to have another, mostly because it is so unique.

Didn't Van Wade (my memory is a bit fuzzy these days) or someone write an article with photos in the Hosta Journal showing him simply cutting off the leaves that he didn't want to keep when he saw a plant sporting. That way the roots and crown weren't disturbed and he could watch the sport progress,...

Your guess is better than mine. I did repot it last year when it had roots coming out of the 1 gal can that it has been in for a couple years. We often get squirrels digging holes in pots and it is entirely possible that some damage was done one way or another. I'll just watch and see. Thanks for th...

I just went out and lifted it, and it isn't rootbound. The pot is slightly bigger than a one gallon can it was in when it was repotted in 2007. We don't have cold winters here, and although all the plants go dormant, they don't have the vigor they do in colder climates and the plants don't get as la...

I've had the stunted and rubber-like leaves on other plants show up every once in a few years, so I understand what you are talking about in the link. These eyes are not like that. They are not rubbery, veiny or tightly whorled. They are three individual eyes, more like a young plants.

What's up with my Great Expectations?

This morning I noticed that my GE is not quite right. I got the plant in 2005 and it has been in the same pot since then. It has 4 eyes this year, only one looks like GE. Should I seperate those eyes, or are the narrower leaves just showing a more juvenile form? Thanks.
