I leave mine in flats, under plant lights till they are 3 to 5 leaves. Keep the plant lights no more than a couple of inches above the plants. When they are ready for transplant, I plant into 8 oz styrofoam cups. Still keep them right under the plant lights. You may need to keep transplanting up int...

Outhouse Delight seedling

This one looked solid green on the first leaf. Good thing I hadn't culled that batch yet!

Chris, I didn't get to do any hand pollinating this summer, as I was having severe back problems. Hopefully next summer...

Re: Outhouse Delight seedlings

I am hoping the couple of white ones will green up. I have an OD seedling from a couple of years ago that comes up very light...not totally white...and it greens up nicely.

Re: Sum and Substance fertile?

I picked a few S&S pods today. I am all for trying those that are not considered to be fertile, those that no one else bothers with. A little experimentation is what gets me thru the winter months.

Re: How to finish seed pod ripening indoors?

Hoping to try the sugar water for my tiny DB that bloomed about a month ago. Picked a lot of pods today, put them in envelopes to continue drying. Surprisingly, I have pods on Swirls, that I got from Chris last year, and one pod on Geisha. I also have a streaked pod on Francee, which has a few strea...

Re: Seeds - viable or not?

I never believe reports of viability. Hyacinthina is supposedly infertile. It sets fewer pods than some, but I have some seedlings from it. A plant may produce 99.9% fatal whites, so grow them, and maybe one will be a spectacular plant. I like to play the odds, and work with plants that no one else ...

Re: What are you working on in the garden these days?

Not doing near as much as I should! Back injury and construction workers next door building DS's house have kept me out of the garden during the daytime. Weeds are rampant. I am playing with a few plants that are streaked or otherwise unusual to get some seeds. A few of my seedlings from last winter...

Re: The drought of '09

You can have all our rain for the next few weeks! DS's house is going up fast. They poured the footer, and started laying block this week. Would like them to stay busy and get this house done!

Re: Curious - what makes one a "hybridizer"?

A person that grows out the seeds is the adopted/host care giver. They are responsible to keep the hybridizer posted on all said seedlings and it's up to the hybridizer to say cull or keep and the naming rights goes to the hybridizer. If you have a sport it's should be noted on what plant it came f...

They are FINALLY starting to build DS's house next week .:bd: DH is doing all of the electrical, so he is going to be busy setting up temporary service.
