Re: Trip to Longwood Gardens late July 2010

Thanks so much Ed. Very good info, pix and directions on the different gardens. Sounds like Chanticleer might be the larger of the gardens. I remember years ago ordering plants from Winterthur before they closed up their online sales. I have never heard of Nemours, $38 million sounds like an impress...

Re: Trip to Longwood Gardens late July 2010

Ed, thanks for the shots of Longwood, I have meant to get there for some time now. Have you visited Chanticleer? Not sure exactly how far it is from Longwood.

Re: Green, anyone, or blue, or yellow?

Linda your Dancing Queen is the nicest one I've seen yet. I had to go back and check my records to see how old mine is, since it is nowhere near the size of your DQ. Looks like mine is three going on four in the garden, wondering if yours is much older?

Re: What's on your fall worklist still?

Unfortunately, the only thing on my list is daily watering. I wish I could rearrange some things or maybe buy some new plants but we are having a killer drought in my area. The ground is cracking in some spots and I have all I can do to keep the container plants watered every day and move the hose a...

Re: Before and After

Can't believe I missed that beautiful door and window, the slate is really a nice touch. I think it will truly be your dream house Aud! Good idea saving the plants from your other house before it goes on the market, who knows if prospective new owners will appreciate them. Would love to see more pho...

Aud what a beautiful woodland garden you created! I'm envious of all your land too. The patio is gorgeous, was it already there?

Yes, big thanks to Paul! I haven't been to a convention yet and always love seeing the photos from the gardens. The pix are much appreciated, next best thing to being there :)

Beautiful pic of War Paint. How old is your WP, Impatience? Mine is about three or four years and only has a few leaves.

Noreaster your gardens are just gorgeous!
In your first pic the hosta in the upper right corner, is that possibly Dream Weaver or Thunderbolt?

Re: Something I've Always Wondered About...

I'm not so sure John. The mottled looking ones like GP and WL would be hard to spot HVX readily, to me anyway. I think I would have to inspect them daily with a magnifying glass :D

Something I've Always Wondered About...

Hostas like Gunther's Prize, Winter Lightning, etc. those with heavily speckled, streaked and mottled foliage. How would one ever know if one of these in your garden developed HVX? I mean it wouldn't be readily apparent. Unless you had it tested you'd never know :-?

Re: The drought of '09

I was surprised to hear of your drought too Chris. We have been so deluged with rain and torrential downpours this year that I didn't realize some parts of the U.S. are suffering from a lack of rain. Wish I could send some your way. Right now it's a beautiful day but we had no May, June or July due ...

Re: Hosta of the Year for 2011 is...

Wow, love the pictures of Praying Hands. The one Chris posted of LG's shows the nice upright form and Linda's shows placement with other hostas in the garden, two lovely photos. I passed on Praying Hands awhile back because I didn't think I'd care for the appearance but I'm changing my mind now. I'm...

Re: what did you not do?

Great thread loulou! Didn't take enough pix here either but that's another story. Have not redone my maps in awhile and that is something I better do since I don't use labels. Never got around to hooking up a small fountain I have. Never got that load of mulch delivered I desperately needed. Or the ...

Re: So what are you doing in your hosta gardens these days?

Wonderful idea for a thread Chris! Also doing the hosta shuffle here. Moved all duplicate hostas to my front yard. Found a hydrangea Pink Diamond at a nursery half price so I planted that to anchor the hosta grouping. Also still trying to find the perfect spots for three hostas from Hallson's sale. ...

Re: Hostas on standby

I started doing that same thing this year. Just because sometimes you get a visitor that wants one of your very pricey hostas. Usually the visitor is someone who doesn't even know what hosta they are looking at :( It's much easier to just give them a pot or two of one of your extra more common ones.

I really like American Icon and Journey's End too!
Three other newer varieties that are outstanding are Atlantis, Cathedral Windows and Emerald Ruff Cut.

Debbie if you're checking out the gardens alive site look at their Escar-Go Supreme. It's the natural iron phosphate slug bait with an added attractant to kill cutworms too. I'm going to try it this year and see how well it works on cutworms. I've previously used the regular Escar-Go and it was grea...

All of those Northern Exposure pix are just heavenly!
I have two of them and neither of mine looks as nice as any of the ones pictured. Mine are getting a fair amount of shade, maybe more light is needed.
