timing for seed starting

I was very happy with my seedlings started at Thanksgiving. I have some vacation then and find I am missing the garden- the seed starting helps! The plants fared very well in raised outside beds built by my D.H. Most flowered over the summer, some even flowered before they left the house. What a joy...

seed starting mix

I've enjoyed the postings on seed starting. Can someone offer a mix that works well? I sterilized commercial potting soil in the oven in a big stainless steel bowl (I didn't think it smelled that bad?!) I didn't have mold problems, but I did have lots of gnats! I didn't realize they were coming from...

We have a Lavendar Twist Redbud (weeping redbud) and a Kousa Dogwood- both reasonably sized, pretty, tolerate partial shade and are hardy in marginal zone 5!

one of my favorites is Snow Angel- mottled green and white leaves and bright pink flowers! try it next to a maroon heuchera!
