Re: *Closed Names Sent out* Hallson's Spring Hosta Trade 2009
I had an oops moment. When I got back from the post office I found I forgot to put in one of the hosta. I will remail it. So my secret trader gets two mailings. I am the lucky one that received 2 mailings. The hosta she forgot to put in the first mailing was 'Golden Oriole.' She was kind enough to ...

Re: Secret Trade Received!
I got my package from morgansrgr8 (Linda) today. Hooray!!! All the plants came in a good condition. She sent me: 'Green Lama' 'Pearl Lake' 'Thumb Nail' or 'Tiny Tears' (she lost the tag in the move and can't tell which) also Rose of Sharon Jack in the Pulpit I am thrilled to add ' Green Lama ' and '...

Re: Show me . . .
I made a sheet for each hosta and tried to keep records...when, where, for how much it was purchased, where it was planted, transferred, traded, ...this lasted for a few years, but it's history now. I drew maps of my garden showing where the hostas are planted ... this lasted only one season. But af...

Re: Secret Trade Received!
Hi FreakyCola, I am so glad that you were happy with my selection. No, it was not easy to decide which hosta would make you smile based a year old list. This is what I did. First, I chose hostas that I'd be able to share and you didn't have. Then I crossed off the names you might have acquired after...

Re: Identification Database
I haven't used it myself, but it is now called HostaSearch and it's with HostasDirect. I was told it is a free public service but you have to register (for free) to use. it. If somebody tries it, please post the experience.

Re: Hallson's Spring Hosta Trade 2009
I've been having a slow start this spring, and thought about the trade... How could I miss the fun! Please count me in. Thanks.

When I came home tired after long hours of work, I found it by the front door. I saw the green Delivery Confirmation sticker and immediately knew it was the Secret Trade! Th...

I made it! I signed up late last night (23rd) and got confirmation right away from Nathalie. Thank you, Nathalie. I have been working long hours at work, and wasn't sure if I would have time. I have decided to make time to relax in my garden this long weekend. Again, thank you, Nathalie, for organiz...

Lily of the Valley is a flower of Hokkaido, the northern island of Japan, where I am from. During the season, department stores have a special corner where you can have potted LOTV shipped to your relatives and friends all over Japan. So I have special attachment to LOTV. The story is different when...

That's funny, Joan. Several years ago, lots of leaves broke off while I was transplanting my green seedling, so I decided to try cooking them. I felt veeeeery guilty when I dropped the leaves in the boiling water as if I was murdering my pet. My heart was beating fast, and my hands were trembl...

How Would You Like Hosta Salad?
It's spring and hostas are coming out of the ground. It is time of the year when hostas taste good, I hear. I am not kidding! Hostas ( H. montana ) are grown in the greenhouse and sold at grocery stores in the spring in Japan. One of my hosta friends took some photos and gave me his hosta recipe to ...

Hi Pieter, I agree with Debbie. Since your hostas are not yet established, hot water treatment is too risky. Cut off the infested leaves as much as possible and treat them with disulfoton. Disulfoton is included in Bayer's Rose & Flower Care (2 in 1 Systemic) which you can find in a garden center at...

Hi Spider, this is my Sultana that won a blue ribbon at the Tri-State (NJ NY CT) Hosta Show 2 years ago. (Yes, Kent was there!) The leaf shows follow the AHS rules that are listed in their web site: Show Classification and Classification List.

Slugs, Weeds and Nematodes! I was away from home over half of last year, and my garden was totally neglected. While I was away, my sister-in-law, my hosta buddy, sent me email telling me slugs were having parties in my garden. When I came back in December, I saw weeds taking over my garden. Nematode...

I had an opportunity to ask Kevin Walek a question when he visited one of the Tri-State Hosta Society meetings. My question was if it is allowed to withdraw a registration if his/her own registered hosta no longer exists or it didn't meet the expectation as it matured. I have never registered nor ha...
