Re: Sick acer palmatum
I also doubt it will recover. If you've already looked up Verticulum wilt and the symptoms are not like that, then I don't have info to offer. I've lost some JMs to very cold winters, since they are grafted, some can be more sensitive than others. Omure Yama is such a beautiful tree too, what a sham...

Re: Shrub Clematis Question
Thanks for the photos and information! I'll probably see about adding at least one to my new garden bed next year. I love those little bells.

Re: Hosta munching?
Is there a chance it was eaten from underground rather than above ground? If so I'd blame voles.

So sorry to hear that Mother Nature is treating your hostas badly with her frosty breath.
I hope the hostas recover after a few weeks.

Dragon Fire purchased new from Chris last year
Picture from last year. It's at least twice the size in every dimension this year. It is still in the same pot (for now).

Re: What new hosta for last year, is now a favorite?
I am really liking how good Dragon Fire is looking this spring. It's my second year in a pot and it has put on a lot of size.

Isadora, your "future 10" list has a couple that are impressing me as well and may move up.

Re: damage
Were you caught by that Gloucester storm? I am so sorry to hear that. I planted three large white (Natchez?) Crepe Myrtles last spring and they grew a good 6-8 feet in one year and are already starting to shoot up this year. I had to use tree watering bags to keep them wet enough last summer though ...

Shrub Clematis Question
Chris has a shrub clematis in the lower garden beds when I visited last year. I am wondering if that kind of clematis would do well in my area. I am in Southern Virginia near the Chesapeake Bay so hot and humid from May to September. I am considering adding clematis to crawl up into a Japanese Maple...

I am surprised, but those actually look pretty cool! Love the idea of bronze seed heads, a garden needs a sense of humor.

Re: Advice: Small Hosta that can handle sun?
I'm so sorry for your loss of your father, I don't know of him, but I think your idea is wonderful. Not sure what size container you were considering, but perhaps you can trade watering help with someone else who visits a family member regularly where your father will rest. Earthboxes have a good si...

Re: Alliums again
I loved the seedheads on the alliums in our garden in Germany...they would fill your hand with their rubbery seed "nubs"...I love the texture of them. Not sure I'd spray them but what the heck, do what makes you happy! With a really big one, you could use glow in the dark paint and use it to find yo...

Re: Standing the ten foot rule -- or not
I like what I like...can't always explain it. And Chris...those ploidy chimeras...ya, I'd buy a (not too expensive) hosta for that reason too! (Wouldn't understand it all, but it's just fascinating how one family of plants can look soo different!) Says one hosta to another..."I thought I'd change my...

Re: Planting mix considerations for new raised bed
I think I will toss that mulch into the bed...good way to get rid of it, lol. A bag or so mixed into several yards of fill won't have enough to mold, I think. You have given me something to think about, a french drain in the gravel was something I had not considered, but could be done. We have done ...

Re: Planting mix considerations for new raised bed
Funny, I just realized I have at least a bag of that cocoa mulch in my shed. I tried some in pots a couple of years ago and it mildewed, so I did not use it elsewhere. It does smell good though! I'll toss it into the upper layer.
