Re: Annual Get Together - this Saturday, August 3rd

Wish I could make it, but I just have too many things going on this weekend. Enjoy everyone, and hopefully next year.

Re: Hostas you just can't seem to grow...

One that does not thrive for me is Blue Hawaii. Every year it puts up about five big fat eyes and I think it will look great...but then it opens and the leaves are puny and the whole thing is just underwhelming. I thought it was supposed to be a vigorous grower, but it hasn't been for me. This soun...

Re: Time for slugs

This is a great tip. I just applied to my seedlings on Saturday, but need to apply to the rest of the gardens yet. Thanks for the nudge!

Re: The ground is still frozen...

Ug...bittercrest is awful. First thing in the spring and again in the early fall. I swear it throws seed 5 days after flowering. I have some mats of chickweed to wrestle out too.

Re: The ground is still frozen...

We've been thawed for about a week, and I'm not too far from you. Probably from the slight zone shift I get from Lake Michigan. This weekend I was able to move several (nicely dormant) mature clumps of grasses, shrubs and hostas. I, too, am thankful for the cool spring so far.

I love FB. It's also one of the best I've used for longer-lasting blue color in seedlings. :)

Re: June - is this crown rot?

I've fiddled with the bleach in the past with decent results but not 100%. I just went ahead and bought the fungicide Prostar and treated with multple soil drenches. It completely cured the SB in the gardens. No signs for years now. There are other fungicides that work too, but Prostar was my choice...

Re: June - is this crown rot?

This looks like Southern Blight. Not crown rot. The close-up pic shows what appears to be the small white/orange "seeds" at the base of the scape. Crown rot is the crown of the plant actually rotting and turning to mush below the soil surface. SB is the petioles rotting at the surface of the soil du...

Re: Had a great time at the Hallson's gathering!

Glad you enjoyed the pics. It's always fun to shoot. I was down in the new shade house shooting lilies when Brian yelled down "Mike, auction time!" Hopefully I wasn't holding up the whole bunch!

Had a great time at the Hallson's gathering!

Fun day! It was great to meet up with people I hadn't seen in a couple years. Had a great time. Once again the food was perfect...oh the memories of the incredible pulled pork. The plant swap and auction is always fun. Good thing Shawna came...I got one of her plants in the swap, and bought one in t...

Re: Saturday, August 4th, Hallson Gardens Summer Get Togethe

I'll be bringing three hostas for the swap and auction. Two are nice and large blue streaked breeder seedlings. The last is a smaller blue/streaky breeder from 'Siberian Eyes' x 'Elvis Lives'. All wonderful hostas that are growing well!

See y'all in the morning.

Re: Help-elegans leaf

I would check the crown for rot. It looks just like the beginning stages of rot (not southern blight). The other option is it was severely stressed with lack of water from the drought. I have a Dorothy Benedict seedling that has completely disappeared. The entire plant turned brown just like this an...

Re: Did everyone cover what they needed to for some frost?

We're supposed to get to 30-31 tomorrow night. Our trees are starting to leaf out, and in the past, that's helped keep a couple of degrees of warmth. Sprinklers will be turned on too. Our local weather has a huge dip in temps to 44º for the high next Wednesday. That could be a very cold night. HOPE ...

Hope everyone had good luck. We never dropped below 36º here. Whew. 4 miles away was still under a freeze warning this morning.

Re: Did everyone cover what they needed to for some frost?

I've had success with using the sprinkler system if the temps are only low 30s or upper 20s. I set it to spray for a couple minutes, every 20 minutes, between 1:00am and sunrise. I figured the water is at least 55 degrees from the ground and would take longer than 20 minutes to freeze again once spr...
