Re: Rust spots on hosta

Hi, I had noticed that the plants with the most damage are those in the part of the garden that has a thick stand of pachysandra for groundcover. I think I even see a slug in one of the pictures I posted. I am reluctant to remove the pachysandra, as it does an excellent job of choking out weeds, so ...

Re: Rust spots on hosta

Thanks a million Chris. We had such a cold and wet spring/summer, that the slugs just proliferated like you wouldn't believe. They are everywhere. I just haven't been able to keep up with them. I am glad that's all this is. Deadline has worked well for me on slugs, but it can't be purchased in MA an...

Rust spots on hosta

Hi everyone, This is the second year I have had my 'Christmas Tree' hosta, and the second year that it has developed tiny holes in the center of the leaves late in the season. The holes have rust-colored borders (the leaves actually look like they've been spattered with rust colored paint), and the ...

Re: Potted hosta overwintering advice?

Thanks Pia. I don't have a shed, but I can keep the smaller potted hostas in the bulkhead over the winter. The bigger ones I will keep under the hemlocks, which is a fairly sheltered area.

Re: Nematodes...again

Thanks Charla. That's what I was concerned about -- the fertilizer in the Bayer all in one. I will try to find it without the fertilizer. We had such a wet August in eastern MA, that nematodes, slugs, and fungi have all gotten out of control in my hosta beds, and I'd like to try to get the upper han...

Re: Nematodes...again

Thanks Chris. I will begin using the diazinon in the spring, in combination with the insecticidal soap and disulfuton. Have you ever used Vydate? I have a small vial of it that I have been avoiding using. I was told to use a half teaspoon per quart of water to treat nem infested hostas. Is it better...

Nematodes...again

Has anyone used diazinon to control nematodes on hostas? If so, what were the results? I was cleaning the storage area under my porch today, and found a bag of granular diazinon that my husband bought years ago to treat our lawn, as well as a small bottle of liquid diazinon. The homemade insecticida...

Potted hosta overwintering advice?

Does anyone leave hostas in pots outdoors over the winter? I have several that I've potted, some following heat treatment for nematodes, some fairly good sized ones that have been growing in pots for years, and some newbies for which I haven't decided on a permanent home. I usually put the potted on...

Re: Nematodes..Guess I'll start it this year

I reported a few weeks ago that I had dug, heat treated, and potted a nem infested Inniswood. Also treated it with disulfuton after potting. Well, one of the three divisions has put up a flush of new leaves, very small, but looking healthy. Don't know if I killed the other two divisions. I've got th...

Re: Hosta `Eola Sapphire'

Just bought Eola Sapphire over the weekend. What an impressive plant. Got a good sized plant with three eyes. Not looking its best at the moment due to some slug damage, but it looks like it will be a keeper. Still in the pot until I decide where its permanent home will be. Also picked up a large Gu...

Re: Nematodes..Guess I'll start it this year

Discovered more nems over the weekend, in two separate plantings of golden scepter. I destroyed all but one of the 10+ plants, and treated the planting holes with boiling water. The one I kept has no sign of nems at present. I potted it and put it in a full sun location, away from other hostas.Time ...

Re: Empress Wu

Thanks Hostahaveum. I potted EW and put her in a shady spot, but separated one eye, which I've potted and placed in full sun. Now I'll wait to see how they grow.

Re: Empress Wu

I would love to see photos of others' EW's whatever their stage of growth. It is hard for me to imagine that something as small as mine is now will (or has the potential to) grow into a giant. I imagine it won't reach its maximum potential size in my shade garden, because it will have to compete wit...

Re: Empress Wu

Thanks everyone for your comments. I've got a spot picked out for EW, and will report back on her growth rate. Am thinking of potting one division to see how it does in a pot.

Empress Wu

I thought I asked this before, but I can't find the previous post. Does anyone have Empress Wu? If yes, how big was it when you got it and how long did it take to reach its mature size? Is it a fast grower? I just got one, a two year old tc plant, and it is small, but very healthy looking, and I was...

Well, Discovered nems in my newest hosta bed this morning -- on Donohue Piecrust. I had already treated it with Disulfuton last week, so I just removed the affected leaves this morning. Sprayed it with homemade insecticidal soap on Saturday. I thought it might have them on Saturday when I was sprayi...

Nems have made their annual appearance in my garden. Inniswood, Gold Standard and Francis Williams are the only ones affected this year so far. I dug up and heat treated Inniswood, since it was looking pretty bad. I treated the Gold Standard with Disulfuton, and removed the affected leaf from Franci...

Thanks for the reply Marlys. Julia Hardy really is an adorable little plant. If I had known the plant was going to stay so small, I would have planted it with my minis. It is in a prominent place the front of one of my hosta beds, and I think I will leave it there.
