Re: long time no post...but this has just amazed me

I think that part of the secret with all the hosta in this bed is that they get a bit of full sun every day. I chose hosta for this bed knowing they would get full sun, and boy - they have grown like gangbusters! I live in Ohio, so some serious clay in the soil, so I amend the soil with pine fines a...

Re: long time no post...but this has just amazed me

I will take a piece of it, and I'm sure that wherever it goes, it will be gorgeous. I just will miss this particular plant! It was one tiny eye when I saved it from freezing, so the size and health of this just blow me away. I don't yet have a new house, so I don't know how much hosta space I will h...

long time no post...but this has just amazed me

This Blue Angel was almost lost to freezing about 6 years ago. It is now the largest hosta in my garden. I'm moving soon, so will have to leave it behind...

HVX on Stained Glass or cold damage?

Just a couple of leaves are showing this - I've had this plant for several years (5-6) this is an "early riser" so not unaccustomed to cold damage. However, this looked a bit too suspicious to me. What do you think? ps been a while since I've posted...getting ready to move & haveing to decide which ...

Treating Southern Blight?

Sorry - I'm sure this has been covered here, but couldn't find specific product names in a search. I have a Spilt Milk that is succumbing to southern blight and would really like to try to save it. I saw that there were some Bayer products mentioned, but there were so many different names in the var...

Re: thoughts on landscape cloth?

More ammo please - I am not in favor of it, but DH is absolutely convinced it is the answer. Since I will be gone for most of June and he will have the weeding and watering duties... I really need to convince him that it is not a good idea.

thoughts on landscape cloth?

I have a large bed in which I have some "someday will be much larger" hostas. Due to time considerations (i.e. lack of time to weed regularly), we are thinking about putting down landscape cloth under the mulch to keep down the number of weeds. Any pros or cons here? how far from hosta stems should ...

Re: Can Spilt Milk take a lot of sun?

To answer jgh - It's hard to say which I like better. When it was in shade, it was a young plant, so not as corrugated. I love the leaves on it - both color and texture. I think the biggest issue with this much sun is that the "milk lines" do scorch a bit on some leaves. I have quite a few blues tha...

Re: Can Spilt Milk take a lot of sun?

I should note that the Spilt Milk above didn't originally get that much sun until our friendly neighborhood electric company came along and butchered the trees anywhere near the power lines. I lost quite a lot of shade! :(

Re: Early vs Late to emerge

I have 3 Guacamoles, and they are all at different stages of being up. One thing that I have noticed is that when I have had Guacamole in a pot over winter, it has been very subject to freeze/thaw damage. I actually took the one that was in a pot and threw it in the ground to over winter this past y...

Re: Can Spilt Milk take a lot of sun?

This is a southern exposure against a fence. I usually have a soaker hose that runs along that line of hostas, so I must have taken this pic before I put the hoses out last year (which was late.)

Early vs Late to emerge

In light of everything being ahead of schedule; I'm already trying to figure out what I lost over the winter. I had planted a strong single eye of Paradigm last August in a spot that has been good for other hosta in the past. It is one of the only one's I'm not seeing at least the hint of an eye. Is...

Re: Can Spilt Milk take a lot of sun?

My Spilt Milk gets full sun for part of the day and has done quite well. I had a small amount of drying out along some of the "milk lines" last year, otherwise, no problems.

The leaf in the background, top left was cold damaged. That I do know. But I'll try to get a closer shot of it when I have a spare moment.

more nematode questions...

I thought I had gotten away without nematodes, then discovered this on my Radiant Edger a couple of days ago. I got the plant last year from a reliable, major hosta dealer, no symptoms last year. Does this look like nematodes to you all? It was in proximity to the Peedee Goldflash that is next in th...

HVX on Gold Standard or usual late season changes?

I've had this Gold Standard for 4 years, purchased from before I was aware of HVX, from a nursury that in subsequent years carried infected plants. I know what a badly infected GS looks like, but this one never seems to look like that. I know they go through some color changes as the summer goes on ...
