Re: Affordable 4 Season Greenhouse

Loving this thread! I don't know why greenhouse kits are so expensive. I guess they figure those of us who are nuts about gardening may just be...nuts! I love the photos, and Capehorn, I especially love the photo of your greenhouse in the snow. May I ask what it typically costs you to heat per month...

seeds from Ed

Hi, Ed -

I got some daylily seeds from you 2 years ago on a forum fundraiser.

Some of them are blooming this year and they are gorgeous. It's just been a few and I didn't get any pics yet. If they keep blooming I'll see if I can catch them with my camera.

Re: bee balm

I love bee balm, and Ed, yours is STUNNING!

I didn't know it till a few years ago when I picked up a variety I didn't have, that each different variety has a different scent.

Did everyone else already know that?

A BIG THANKS FROM ME, TOO! Like everyone says...beautiful pics of beautiful gardens. I also know what time it takes to do something like this. I'm very appreciative for your efforts. I enjoyed and studied each slide show - some more than once. Things like these are what have helped me improve my ga...

After seeing this post I had to go to the HL to have a look.

I agree, they are stunning!

Don't know if they are for sale anywhere though, and if they are they are probably reallllllly expensive....breeders, I'd guess.

Re: Great Hallson Hostas

I got a great order from Hallson's last week, too.

Beautiful plants, great packaging, huge roots ----as always.

Like you say, even though things were on sale, they still were nice and healthy - not just somebody's leftovers.

Thanks again Chris and Brian for the great job you do for all of us!

Re: Am I going nuts?

Sounds normal to me!!!!

To get variegated seedlings, Dash, you usually have to use a streaked parent plant (pod parent). There are a few exceptions to this, but one in a million type exceptions.

Continue having fun!

Re: hostas in container

Yes, I cover them with mulch. Very lightweight mulch, like leaves or straw or something. The crowns are down inside the pots so if the mulch is coarse enough, it kinda just sits on top.

Re: HVX - Highlights from Keynote address by Dr Ben Lockhart

I have wondered, in dealing with infected plants in the garden, if it would be better to first remove the SURROUNDING plants? If the roots of surrounding plants tear when removing them they tear while being torn AWAY from the infected ones? That way the torn infected roots won't be coming in contact...

Re: Any idea what causes this.

It looks like lack of water to me.

But then if it is a sport, it just may not be a good one...

It doesn't look diseased....maybe dig it up and see if something is bothering the roots? A rock underneath, or something else competing with it?

Re: hostas in container

I've wintered over a lot of pots thru the years in my zone 5. Drainage, drainage, drainage seems to be the key. Also, do not repot them late in the season...that was devastating one year. I do not think burying them half way is good. If they are buried, they can't drain. Also you still have the crow...

Re: Does this look like Red Alert?

Glad I got my Red Alert last year!

It seems to be a pretty good grower here, but had closed flowers last year. Very disappointing as the reason I bought it was for breeding. Nice looking plant though. Maybe since it is older this year, it will bloom...

Sorry to hear about this right before the convention, Jim! If pyrethrin kills them, then permethrin would certainly do the trick. The difference about permethrin is it has staying power. It is the synthetic "equivalent" to pyrethrin which is hard to find in large quantities and is very expensive. If...

HI, all!

Could use your expert help with this...

A few days ago I purchased some forget-me-nots and creeping veronica at Walmart and a hardware store.

They looked so nice....but then I thought...,"do these carry any pests or diseases that could be passed to my hostas?"

What do you think?
