Re: Masses of weed
Hi, Pia - Bummer! Weeds are such a pain! Preen is a pre-emergent to prevent weed seeds from germinating, but won't do anything to help once they've germinated. There's always Round Up, but of course, you must be very careful not to get it on any desirable plants. We have a pre-emergent product calle...

Re: Mole City
A few years ago I put some castor oil in hot water (to keep it suspended) with a little dish soap in my hose end sprayer. I sprayed the yard and the beds with it, and didn't really have much problem with moles after that. You have to start spraying around the house and move out toward the outer peri...

I love this topic - what a great question! Lovely photos, everyone! Gayle and Phil, I would love to visit you and your place sometime...I live just south of Kansas City. We, too have rocks and things we acquire when digging - like for the foundation of the house, water lines, or to put in another pe...

That is a lovely plant!
I noticed yesterday coming by my forsythia, that it had one lone yellow blossom on it...of course, it had gotten frozen the night before...

How could anyone consider putting someone like him 'down.'????!!!!! Someone ought to put them down!!! (sorry, but it just ticks me off!)
So glad he came to live with you....I don't know how he orchestrated that trick, but he must be really smart!

Re: Too late to dig hostas?
Hi, there... Sounds like you have nothing to lose by trying. Personally, if I could, I would take whole clumps of smaller ones that could be dug up. Then I would take as large a piece of the bigger ones as I could manage. I would dig it up partially, cut it through with a very sharp disinfected knif...

Re: Finally got a hard frost
We've had a couple of hard frosts with lowest temp at 33, but several in the low 30's. The tree cover around the house has prevented even the annuals from being bitten, although I quit watering so everything is dying anyway. I did notice yesterday that Red Alert, and a couple of seedlings still look...

Re: Black Walnut Leaves
Gardentoad, I plant my hostas right up under the walnut trees. As long as there is enough soil for the hosta to grow, the tree roots don't present a problem. I have accidentally planted some too close to be able to send roots deeply enough, and while they didn't die, they didn't thrive, either, and ...

Bummer you are working nights, Chris! I don't know if that is something I would ever get used to.
Sorry I couldn't add any pics - I don't have any of these hostas....guess I'll have to put in a big order in 2010!
After seeing that pic, Powder Blue is at the top of my list!
