Re: I'm feeling like Midas!

I have to laugh at this post as. I not only outgrew that greenhouse very quickly but we left it behind when we moved. Since it was not my idea to move I made DH buy me a new greenhouse. At times it has been too small. You would think that 10' x 20' would be ample!

Long time no see!

Several years ago I was very active here and I am not sure why I ever left. It is good to see so many familiar names still here!

Re: Nice hosta for BIG container?

Well, I ended up with a very large OVAL container. This suits itself best to a mixed planting which gives me all sorts of ideas for incorporating hostas.

Thank you all so much for the great hosta recommendations!

Re: Nice hosta for BIG container?

So many choices!

I'll be choosing the pot today. My friend is a horticultural professional and she is taking me to a wholesale pottery firm where the pros shop. I get to explore an ACRE of pottery!!! What a blast this will be.

Re: Nice hosta for BIG container?

Wow. That Ginsu Knife is beautiful. I'll need to go measure my overall area to see if I could handle the habit of that or if I'll need a tighter or more upright habit.

Thanaks for all these good suggestions. I am getting so inspired!

Re: Nice hosta for BIG container?

Okay, I'll stay away from the urn shape. The pot will be terra cotta colored to match another one I have. Are you familiar with the winterproof Vietnamese and Chinese pottery? That color. An open top would more closely match the other one. I'll be getting it this next week so I can post a picture.

Re: Nice hosta for BIG container?

The overall plant width could be anything. I have sources where I can buy a 5 gallon or larger plant to put in and I don't mind waiting a few years for it to fill the container. I can also do some height here without a problem.

Nice hosta for BIG container?

I have an area between the laundry room wall and a walkway where I will be putting a container that is about 36" tall and wide. I haven't chosen it yet so I don't know how big the opening will be. I'd love to have a sole, specimen hosta in it. I am partial to the cupped, corrugated leaves but am ope...

Re: KellieD's page/book/journal/blog

Wow. That was a trip down memory lane! The sad news is that there is still so much to do but the good news is that so much has been done since the last time i posted. Right now I am getting ready for heuchera growing which means cleaning out the greenhouse of all the extra stuff that tends to gravit...

Love this idea!

I have a Miscanthus 'Flamingo' in a large stoneware pot in a prominent spot. A couple of years ago I planted snowdrop and crocus bulbs throughout after I had cut it back for the winter. Last spring they came up long before the foliage started growing and helped bridge the gap. Once the foliage start...

Lion's Head Maple (Shishigashira) is a must have in my book. That price is great for that size IF it is not mislabeled. I say go get it!

Hoyas also like to be a bit potbound. Between that and keeping then drier they bloom profusely.

Cutting the leaves off is a cosmetic thing. It won't hurt the plant if you leave them.

So it begins

The hellebore season is starting here in a really big way. I finally brought home the 40 or so hellebores that DorisJ babysat for me for the last few years and got them planted. The ones that overwintered in the greenhouse have been moved outside and the ones that were planted in 2007 are starting t...
