Re: Daily Hosta #1 - 'Emerald Ruff Cut' - Add your pics

Mine is about the same age, Ann..and hasn't been very fast growing. It still desiccates every year for me, but I've gotten over that...doesn't seem as disfiguring as it was when it was younger. Excuse the sheen from being recently watered. The leaves have a more upright, mature look this year. http:...

Re: Nematode treatment

I am quite sure I have them in ferns, and I think Heuchera too. From everything I've read, there are no chemical controls available to the home gardener. Digging up, boiling soil, throwing out...and still not being able to guarantee elimination, just holds no appeal. All I wish for is that some hosta...

No, but many believe Imidicloprid is what's killing all the bees!

Re: Nematode treatment

but I think you sometimes just need to pick your own battles. To me I'd rather have tiny nematode free plants or start with new plants in treated soil than have huge clumps with worm infested foliage. Chris A couple years, after I became aware that some of my hostas had nematodes, I dug about five ...

Re: Funny how some plants grow or don't

I've got Heatwave in a spinout bag and it seems to doing well in there. I do have a couple in my garden that just refuse to grow, and it's baffling because their neighbors are doing fine. They are Blue Hawaii, Joseph, and Brother Stephan ( sp? ). I

Re: Growing hostas under trees - which trees work?

My largest hosta is at the base of a red maple. It's only been there for six years so I know there is still a chance the tree will get the best of it. But I try to stay optimistic.. I I know we'd all like some sort of ideal situation- plenty of dapplesd shade yet no tree roots to contend with, but i...

Thanks, Chris...but now I really want to go check out that one I gave to my FIL! I didnt know Loyalist had a bad reputation like so many of the other white centered ones.

I looked at my records and it was pretty slow to increase the first few years....seems to have picked up the pace in the last two seasons.

Re: Loyalist-is this the slowest grower?

Here is a pic I just took. Started with three eyes in 2008, and up to thirteen this year. This is probably about the size of the one I gave to my FIL a few years ago...I have to go over and see how that one is doing. http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y251/colleenseamus/garden/94a6c01a-0dbc-4cc9-ba06-...

Re: Loyalist-is this the slowest grower?

Mine seems to do ok, adding a few eyes every year. Of course one year ones those eyes was solid green, which I not appreciate :x . I had a larger Loyalist in a pot ( pretty big when I bought it), which I gave to my FIL, figuring my smaller one in the ground would catch up eventually. Kind of regret ...

Re: Queen of the Seas!

Queen of the Seas is a real standout in my garden this year (I bought it from Hallsons in 2007). It seems extra tall and extra frilly on the edges to me http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y251/colleenseamus/garden/efcddcb1-a1a3-48b9-95e0-53a5629045ff_zps5d7f17e0.jpg behind Tokudama F, which is also ha...

Looking good!

I see you have a peachy orange heuchera near Halcyon. I also love that color next to blue hostas. In fact I have a lotof orange and blue mixed in my home decor...just find that visually pleasing! I hope you are staying dry- more rain on the way here.

Re: Blue Ivory

Pretty! Maybe the key to getting 'Blue Ivory' to really show off is to plant them in clusters. The ones shown in your picture are pretty much the size mine is, and I've had it for 4 years. ;) Yeah, the cluster idea is a good one. Mine is also four years and has one eye with a handful of leaves. It'...

Re: Would love to post some of Hosta ps but .........

Ugh, don't tell me that...you're several hours south of me and I had hoped this would be over soon. What a soggy, depressing day out there. I am afraid we'll get water in the basement tonight. On the plus side, it looks like Thunderbolt and Regal Splendor are almost touching from all this rain. I hav...

Re: Hostas you just can't seem to grow...

Yeah, I am bummed about Blue Hawaii. I can try watering it more- it is in a spot that I tend to not water so much, though all the other hostas in that bed seem to do well. I am pretty sure it's planted at the correct depth and all that. It's just frustrating....the eyes looked so big, fat, and healt...

Re: Favorite Hosta Groupings

Karen, thank you- I know a lot of people regard creeping Jenny as a scourge because of the rampant spreading, but I have been able to keep that patch extending no more than a foot into the bed, if that. I like it too much as a fringe up front to get rid of it. It only takes me a few minutes each mon...

Re: Favorite Hosta Groupings

Pretty combo, Karen! I just swapped out El Nino for First Frost in this bed. El Nino has been a bit of a dud for me but First Frost has been growing well. The other two hostas are Love Pat and Remember Me. I like that Remember Me and First Frost are reverses of each other. Sometimes I like there to ...
