Re: Is this Lancifolia???
When we moved into our home 13 years ago, we had tons of Lancifolia along our driveway and in another area, tons of a very small hosta that looks and flowers just like Lancifolia but is much smaller. These clumps have never gotten any bigger than 12" across. I haven't checked for spots on the petiol...

Re: Got any underappreciated common hostas?
I'd like to put in a plug for undulata Albomarginata. Have you ever taken a close look at the leaves. There are white sections, green sections, grey-green sections and green-grey sections. I think it is a beautiful leaf and a wonderful, forgiving plant. http://i271.photobucket.com/albums/jj147/loisf...

Re: Established, but unhappy hostas....Move then now?
Janey, I have many of the fragrant hosta in about 5 hours of late-morning/early afternoon sun, and they love it. They would include Stained Glass, Guacamole, Holy Mole', plantaginea, and Iron Gate Delight. My Dick Ward, Rainfort Delight and Radiant Edger also thrive in quite a bit of sun. I'm in Zon...

Re: Do you have a favorite newly acquired plant this year?
I couldn't resist Ripple Effect this year either. It's a beauty. Three that I just got late this summer that I am really excited about growing are Neptune, Spotlight and Silver Bay. In fact, I'm still looking for a spot to plant Silver Bay. Too many hosta; too little space. Lois

Thanks, Paul, for all your work in assembling the slide shows. You are a great addition to the local (and national) hosta community. Hope to see you at some of the MN Hosta Society meetings. Lois

The ones that have been really successful for me are Blue Mouse Ears, Baby Bunting, Lakeside Baby Face, Dixie Chick, Kifukurin Ko Mame, Green with Envy, Green Eyes and Hi Ho Silver. Some of these are classified as small rather than dwarf, or mini.

Re: How long before you replant?
Thanks, Chris and others. That's not very good news for those of us with limited space. I may try removing as much soil as possible - if it ever stops raining, that is - and waiting next year to replant. I had left the hole unfilled hoping to dry out any remaining roots, but the rain just keeps comi...

How long before you replant?
After an infected plant is removed from the soil, how long should a person wait before replanting a hosta in the same spot. I've heard everything from one month to one year. Is there some more current information? Last time, I left the hole for one month and then did some rearranging and planted aro...

Re: Test strips - false positives
Thanks, everyone, for your clarity. I am probably the poster from another forum with the puckered Patriot who noticed tissue breakdown, tested the plant, got a positive result, threw the plant out and then had several forum members suggest that paranoia or panic might have been my problem and that I...

Re: Patriot infection or paranoid?
Bill and Chris, thanks for the excellent photos and discussion about HVX and Patriot. My sister gave me my Patriot several years ago. It has always been lovely, but this year it came up looking just like yours, Bill. Strangely shaped, puckered leaves and tissue collapse. I tested with the Agdia stri...

Re: Opinion on H. 'Aristocrat'
Gee, I've never had that problem with Aristocrat. Mine is in quite a shady location, but it has never tattered like Brim Cup, for example, which I have had terrible luck with... even in full shade. I do water frequently, however. Maybe you could try moving it.

Re: OK First Frost
Chris, they hadn't suffered a frost yet. We had our first light one only yesterday, and most of the hosta didn't seem affected at all. And you're right about the snow protecting them. It's only 34 now at 2:00, but the sun it out and the snow is melting. Unbelievably, many of the hosta are slowing li...

This was the scene we awoke to this morning, along with a temperature of 24 degrees. Yesterday was glorious; everything was still blooming. Re: Does anyone "trim" their hostas?
This is embarrassing to admit, but we started the practice years ago before I became a hosta fanatic. The former owners of our house planted a row of lancifolia on either side of the driveway, about 40 feet on each side. The first year, we didn't trim back the hosta, and it was so difficult to shove...

Jim, it's so hard to be the one who cares the most about a given subject, isn't it? I often find myself in a similar position. Lois
