Re: What eats the entire leaf but not the stem?
I'm having the same problem with my hosta. This spring, a ground hog had moved in, and he is getting pretty fat eating just the leaves of my hosta. My pet terrier passed away last fall. I never had critter problems when he was around.

Re: My Sansiveria smells.....
Angie,
Thank you for the response. I've on other forums as well, and your explanation might be the best. I let the plant sit out for a while, with reduced watering, and the smell went away. The plant is doing fine.

My Sansiveria smells.....
.....like a dead animal. I repotted my Sansiveria this past spring. I used the same mix I've always used. I'm watering the same as I always have. The plant looks healthy and seems to be fine otherwise. It stinks, and I've put the plant outside to get rid of the smell. Any ideas what might be causing...

Re: Smashed hosta
Thanks guys. I figured they would be ok. They'll be buried under leaves in a few weeks anyways. The picture was taken on Friday, 10-24. My yard is kind of odd. I have a few spots that still look as good as they did in the spring, and other spots that have gone down completly for the season. You can ...

Smashed hosta
I had to have some work done around the house, and a few of the hosta got run over by a truck.
It's late in the season, so I'm assuming they will be ok. Is there anything to do besides wait?

KHT, what do you mean by "treat the soil with sand"?
What do you use to spray for bugs?

Bringing house plants inside
I have about a dozen house plants outside that will need to come inside in a few weeks. It's the first year I've left them outside long term. Any advice? Do I need to worry about bugs or other hitch hikers?

Re: Leaves as mulch
We have lots of oak & hickory nut trees & have a leaf vac & mulcher that we pull behind the lawn tractor & I was thinking about using the shredded leaves to put around the hosta. I was wondering, do I need to leave an inch around the base of the hosta like you would regular mulch, or is it ok to pu...

Re: Look what I found...
We just moved here last September. we have lots of water and trees around us. It's amaziing how loud these little guys can get. It's one the things I really enjoy about sitting outside at night.

Re: Leaves as mulch
Leaves or other mulch on top of the soil will not draw any nitrogen from the soil. The problem with nitrogen binding is when the mulch is mixed into the soil.
I've used leaves as mulch, and had really good results.

Re: Why do some hostas shrink?
IMO, using fertiliser on top of the snow is just letting the chemicals leach through the soil. The snow melt, and spring rains wash most of it away before the plants get to use it. I wouldn't fertilise anything until it's growing, and able to use it. With all of the double digging, amending, and mul...

Re: Sawdust on hosta beds
Any material on the soil surface will not bind nitrogen. it will if it's mixed, but on the surface is fine.

Has anyone heard of putting down crab shells? I tried it this year after hearing something about it at hosta college. Seems the Chitin in the shells feed the beneficial fungi living in the soil and this fungi preys on the nematodes, I guess it really wouldn't be effective if your plants are already...

Debbie, my guess is that the duct tape won't disintigrate like masking tape would, but when the plant seems ready to stand on its own, you could snip between petioles and trim so that there will just be small strips or shreds of tape sticking to the petioles. It may look a bit strange but it should...
