I submitted some seed, but (with so many of my own to grow next year) wasn't too interested in buying more. I bid on one of the "red"-flowered ones, but backed out when they hit $40.
Some of those Dan Wols packs were something, though!

Re: Some thoughts on sterile hostas
Seed pod set on Blue Angel (and its sports) is not that uncommon, but seed fertility is generally next to nothing. Bill Meyer believes that lots and lots of water during seed ripening may help. To that end I collected seed (both OP and controlled crosses) with Dream Maker (a.k.a. Confused Angel) thi...

Re: Helena says hi
Hi, Helena, I see you're interested in more information about hostas. Chris (owner of now-closed Hallson Gardens) has some good information here, but I've also compiled a lot of helpful knowledge at http://www.delvalhosta.org/hosta-info . Especially note the FAQ sections. David (President, Delaware ...

Impressive, and on such a young plant. What do you think the hosta will look like?

Re: Some yearlings...
They're fun. I'm reluctant to attach real names to seedlings until they're actually in the garden for further evaluation, but I do put shorthand abbreviations on them, based on parentage. And then I might make up names based on the abbreviations. (For instance, my crosses of Lightning Flash with Rin...

Re: Best way to post hostas for identification?
These days I'm not here as often as I am at FB, where there are lots more eyeballs in general. I'm not a member of the Hosta ID group; not to put too fine a point on it but I see a lot of uniformed guessing when I look there. (But if I joined I fear it would become a time suck.) One-at-a-time posts,...

Holy Mole and Avocado seem nearly identical. Guacamole has more color. Stained Glass is even better.

Does this one have a name/lineage? Looks nice. I'm guessing the hosta is a Plain Jane, though.

No problem. Just had to make a fresh login. Obviously the old domain points to this one, but I'll still modify any links I have at our hosta society website.

Re: Hosta of the Day - minima
So this is interesting. I noted the pollen (anther) color right away. Schmid discusses "Minima/Minuta" in his monograph on H. venusta, identifying it as a non-valid cultivar name for a small-leaved selection of the species that has been around for many decades. Perhaps identical to 'Thumbnail', 'Tin...

I'm still curious what happened with the Brother Stefan sport. Brotherly Love, would, of course, have made a great choice for our 2018 convention plant. Alas.
(Ed, it seemed this post was all about Hallson's sports.)

Should have interesting blooms, right? Dostoyevsky isn't in Hosta Library or Hugo's Database, but I seem to recall it has dark flowers.

Re: The smell of hyacinths - Crystal Moon
I have to think that editor Bob Olson’s illness and treatment resulted in an issue that wasn’t up to usual standards. Hence the slightly bizarre choice to run pictures of this year’s convention gardens (taken in 2006 and 2016-17j for an issue that many folks received the week of the convention. I ho...

Is the foliage actually fading or are they getting the (common) powdery mildew turning them gray?
Peonies do like to be fertilized.

Ours was in a pretty sunny space but never looked as good as that. Eventually we tossed it as a non-performer.

Re: 'Earth Angel' sport
Pieter, Perhaps it's telling that there are no named "yy" (all-gold) sports in the 'Blue Angel' family shown in Hugo's database, although perhaps 'Firefighter's Angel' could be close (registered, but no pics in Hosta Library). It will be interesting to see how it lives on its own. If it does well, t...

Nice shots. I bought an inexpensive sport cam with underwater housing for our last trip. Looking at your pics makes mine look so pale. (Fish are the same, but coral is less colorful.) Here are three shots from the trip (more at Facebook, but...) if you'll allow me to piggyback.
