No, Marlys... you didn't sound/don't sound mean! I was just speculating that people have acquired bad habits when it comes to asking for hostas because we have had such a grand tradition of giving things away. Truth is, if you give things away, some people will appreciate it and other people will gr...

Wow, Lisa - hate to think about Andy "pushing up daisies" - I assume that a passed spouse, properly planted, would be pushing up hostas. Zoning regulations being what they are, my final goal is to become compost for wildflowers in the Beartooth Mountains. My pet peeve... people stepping on my plants...

I'll go off the top of my head... and not use up all 10 votes right away because my memory is like swiss cheese... not ranked... but I couldn't live without... June Touch of Class (I never thought a hosta might replace June in my #1 spot, but maybe...) Kiwi Full Monty (I started with Striptease, but...

Phyllis... we ARE going to make that happen this year! And Poppi - I haven't noticed anything odd about the LBS plants in the past couple of years, so I hope I don't have nematodes. The pic was taken in 2003, in September, so I hope it was just first year stress and end of the season... I'll have to...

I used to be able to sell Phyllis a couple of hostas a year... but not with beauties like this coming from her breeding and seeding... nice hosta!

Darn... wrote a whole long entry... and then lost it to computer glitches. I'll try again... One of my first hostas was a ventricosa. It went into a little used area on the north side of my house. In a few years I learned something lots of people already know - that ventricosa self-polinates itself ...

Wow, Chris... that "muddy coloration" is exactly what I'm talking about... so I've gotten two sets of virused plants...

now I'll have to watch all my other Halcyon plants - and I've got lots of them, kind of a collection of mine. Nothing odd so far in any of them...

Paradise Joyce and HVX

I've had a couple of Paradise Joyce plants for a couple of years. The color on them always develops a little oddly and they always have smallish "spots" of blue. I worried that they might be HVX and have watched them go through this odd color changes for thei third time this year. For my sale this s...

paranoia strikes deep into your life it will creep it starts when you're always afraid step outta line, the man comes and takes you away my goodness... where would I have to be in my life that I'd be afraid to tell someone what hostas I crossed five years ago to get a favorite seedling? Sometimes I ...

As an ardent civil rights advocate, I had to vote "no" - because of the way the question was phrased. I don't see it as possible or desireable to force people to register a hosta. But I strongly support the contention that any hosta sold or traded by name SHOULD have that plant and name registered. ...

nice work! Thanks for the reassurance. I have been questioning my planting due to forum comments about planting shallower. I've always felt that with our brutally hot summers and brutally cold winters, that planting deep enough that none of the crown is exposed was the right way to go. My only quibb...

and you both beat me to the punch! A little candlelight, a little Barry White... By the way, now is the time for the lazy to watch the garden for new seedlings. As I weed around I'm finding lots of little one leaf hostas of who-knows parentage... when I have time, I like to move them to the back for...

thanks for pointing out the glitch... when I copied the list from my database, some of the apostrophes got turned into question marks... I have painfully edited all of them I could find, so it reads better now!

Got into hostas the usual way. Somebody gave us some when we were newly into our first - and only - house. We called it the "little hovel on the prairie." We were poor and broke and grew mostly vegetables... and heated with scavanged wood, even though we were smack dab in the suburbs. We've virtuall...

Reminds me of the old days... riding the prairies on the great old toad drives... campfire singing drowned out by the toads croaking under the full moon... then driving them into the giant toad corrals and the end of the trail, shipping them off to city slicker gardens all over the world... ah, thos...
