they are greedy feeders, and like to be in soil rather than a tub or or restricted liner. do you cover it each winter? the root is quite hardy, but the crowth stems are not, so if last years growing point died a new one will be small each year, that might account for a small palnt with a large root ...

you need to sow the seeds fresh, put them in a pot on top of the compost and cover them with a thin layer of perlite or grit, they do need the winter eliments to germinate them, so leave the pot where mother nature can do her stuff, but shelter from the hardest of the weather, under an evergreen bus...

It depends on the plants, the papyrus will need light and need to be kept warmish, if the other plants have tubers its better to dry them out and store them like dhalias, if not they will need light to survive a winter :(

It does look like aphids, didnt think they would get so close to water, I know they secrete a sticky mess that can effect the plants around it, not sure what effect if any they might have on the water and water plants, interesting problem.

upvc pond liner will last for years under, I burried one for a boggy area 10 years ago, lifted a bit of it last month and its still intact.

I have 3 hostas potted in my pond, and they are the best looking ones in the garden so drainage isnt needed much either it seems.

Preformed are harder to install, they need to be perfectly level, you need to lay it on sand too so it beds down propperly with no gaps underneath it.

but as Josh says, one of them or no pond! easy choice.

congrates on your first pond, may it bring you joy :)

Same here Chris, I use a bit of garden soil from the back of the shed, never been dug, fertalised or planted in, about a rough as you can get, but all my water plants seem to like it well enough.
