Sum & Subst. - What Do You Think

Hi All I think my Sum & Substance has HVX. I have noted very, very faint bleeding for past two years on one to two leaves, but it seems to disappear later. This year, I think it is worse, but still really only on two leaves enough to really see. Hope the pics are good enough. They show top and botto...

Slug and Snail Control

I've had hostas muched on a little by snails and slugs in the past. BUT, this year they appeared particularly bad -- to the point that I actually saw several dozen (tiny ones) every morning on leaves and stems. Yuck! :( I've not found the one or two huge slugs that I had sometimes encountered for ye...

Urban Garden Hodgepodge

Just posting a few pics from this past weekend of some of the garden areas. After last years terrible heat and drought I am super surprised at how well most things have come back this year. I have 6-7 plants or so that came back noticeably smaller, some with bunches of smaller leaves- Silver Bay, Th...

Re: Help-elegans leaf

I agree with Pieter that it is a water issue. I don't know about overwatering, but I have leaves like this on many hostas each year - usually the larger, older leaves that wilt and die and I pull them off and the plant is fine and comes back the next year. The dessication of the leaf means that eith...

Re: Diagnosing HVX on Halcyon

THank you both for your positive responses.

I don't know a thing about what would cause these marks on the underside bloom of the leaf.

Does anyone know?

Again thanks, and I'll proceed as if my Halycon is doing okay.

Re: #2 The Poll To End All Polls (until the next one) - BLUE

Listed what looks 'blue' in my garden but, a couple are considered blue/green officially so may have to be overlooked by the poll-taker :D . Dwarf = Blue Mouse Ears (yes, I know people will argue that this is a small, but mine fits here after 5 years) Small = Blue Chip, Blue Blush Med = Silver Bay, ...

Diagnosing HVX on Halcyon

Hi All I think I read a little while ago that dianosing HVX on Halcyon was difficult. Since I purchased mine in 2005, before I knew about the plague, I've kept an eye on mine and have not seen the typical signs on the top of the leaf. But, I decided to look on the backside, and noticed the discolora...

Re: The Poll To End All Polls (until the next one) - GREEN

Here is my attempt to get stuff in the right categories -- many of mine are still growing, so I used Zillis for size, others have been growing long enough, that I think they are mature. If you disagree jgh, just ignore my entries, or put them where you think they should be. Dwarf= Twist of Lime, Lit...

Re: How is everyone with the storms?

Sorry to hear of the damage to your summer flowering plants. Not fun, and hard on the eye when you'd like to be enjoying the garden. But, I'd gladly give up my taller perennials for any kind of decent, sustained rainfall, storm or otherwise. All of Indiana is under SEVERE or EXTREME (NWS second high...

Re: Doggone critters!!!

Such inflamed hatred of critters that you'all share the planet with -- and this the second thread in 2-3 months on the same topic. A small voice in the wilderness here perhaps, but maybe a viable alternative would be to choose to live somewhere where you won't be so bothered by them - perhaps a more...

Re: Watering hosta gardens

Hi Noreaster In terms of watering with an overhead sprinker vs wand I think you'll find differing opinions and in the long run it's whatever people determine works for them. I don't think anyone can tell you how long it takes to water your plants deeply because it depends on your soil and drainage a...

Re: Watering hosta gardens

I've read that you can take a can like a regular size tuna can and place it out in the open not under trees where you are doing overhead watering. When the can is full you have watered 1 inch. To be consistent you have to make sure that you turn the hose on so that it delivers the same amount of wat...

Re: 24 Hours Left Before The Planet Explodes

I'd have to choose
Liberty
June
Blue Angel
Because they would all look good together also.

Re: is summer dormancy real?

Hi Chris I can only answer for myself, but I understand the concept to mean that the plant does actually shut down, i.e., it goes to sleep and stops or severaly slows down cellular processes. So in that sense it is the same as fall dormancy, and I could imagine that under very, very prolonged stress...

Re: 2nd year in my garden Blue Angel in bloom

Looking good. First one is a pick of my Blue Angel this year --its 7th year in the garden. It does get brief morning sun, and filtered afternoon sun. I wish I had the room to grow more of these spectacular very large hostas. Second pic is the same plant a the beginning of 3rd year in the yard. You'l...

Re: Hosta June-3 weeks in the ground

Yay! - good news from JGH as I've wondered about whether my June was really JUNE! From your pic, I think mine is more like the original - stays blue and has mostly subtle green, but I get a few leaves that tend toward the yellow center. Not a very good pic as I cropped it from a larger view of the g...

Re: is summer dormancy real?

Hi All I also am most interested in Chris' experience with this, and hope to get some specific information. I was thinking this may be at least partially why they don't water their hostas above 90 degrees, but wait to drench them when temps cool down :hmm:. I think that plant dormancy of hostas is r...

Re: encouraging root growth

Here is an excerpt from a Bob Solberg article on hosta physiology. I understand from this and other things I've read that root growth actually follows leaf development---leaves develop in the spring and then also after blooming and the roots follow to support the leaves. Entire article is at http://...

Re: Weed Bed treatment?

Hi Linda Yep the triclopyr works on bindweed really well. I had an area with bindweed that I tried for 5 years to control by digging and finally 2 years ago used the bonide product. I like the applicator because I can paint it on individual leaves of the weed and not damage the ornamentals in the be...

Greensense 20% acidity vinegar" is white vinegar that's four times more potent than the household variety.... The folks at Rhode’s stress that their Greensense product is a grain based vinegar, not a petroleum-based product like the Acetic Acid used in photography. Once it’s done its work, a grain-...
