Re: what would cause iris foliage to get mushy

Sounds like iris borer damage. This division
seems to have recovered-note the new growth- after a
thorough rinsing by garden hose w/nozzle. The scar can
be seen at the foliage's base:

Re: Iris rhizomes

I think the landscaping around your average subdivision home is incomplete without
some irises. Now:

The Zinger in action. It saved my irises in the back
last year.

Re: Iris rhizomes

The goal here is to have irises and the peony putting
on their show together.

I'm gradually learning which iris varieties to use.
For now it looks as though it'll be the yellow (Spirit of Memphis).

Re: Iris rhizomes

Here in iris borer country we have to coddle our irises. Mine are mulched with
crushed limestone, and a Zinger is left on at night-it works- to give
these new sets a fighting chance.

Re: My Iris

Were you able to move any of those beauties? lol My iris bed project is slowly taking form up front of the house here - the slow and expensive route - by mailorder and lift & divide. The arrangement I have in mind will have four varieties at most :yellow, and two shades of blue; all selfs. And here's...

Re: Parasites

Using the Stinger last summer seems to have paid off as of last week. Couldn't find any damage. I do believe it's time to put it back to use now, though; for instance, here's last night's take ,after the third night this week. Nothing significant came up the first two nights,though- just mosquitos a...

The west wall as of today, with about four years to go for that remaining gap in the left foreground to fill in by my estimate.

The east border as of today.

A flowering bush cherry Prunus Tomentosa is the season's opener.
Just maybe that lilac may send out a flower despite its being lopped back
last year.

Re: Features Of The Overplanted Border 1: Trees and Shrubs

I'm leaving the flowering bushes alone for now; maybe the Nanking cherry'll bloom - the lilac won't, for sure. Needs another year. They'll be done in the summer, just enough to maintain a compact size. The yews and that pine branch frame them nicely. Hopefully those irises -yellow- together with two...

The East Border as of around eight o'clock this morning, turning dormant: winter weather is just days away. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v188/nekonomad/plantaholic/plantaholic0127A.jpg I'm not really sure if the irises are happy; they get only half a day's sunlight. Am pondering as to what to do...

This morning the flowering crab received its annual coiffure - a light trim, if you may- to maintain a cared-for appearance. Re: Features Of The Overplanted Border 2: The Perennials

And Jane, I really have my heart set on establishing an iris bed at the front of the border out back with tellow border deardeds. Yellow set against the green of the hedges should make for a pleasing and elegantly simple scheme. The primulas should overlap their blooming times, like, in mid May (hop...

Re: Features Of The Overplanted Border 1: Trees and Shrubs

Took some time today to touch up an apple tree out back, nipping back this year's growth to maintain a manageably sized flowering ornamental malus ; we had a sunless day, so,sun-in-the-eyes wasn't a problem. The beauty of the pole pruner w/telescoping adjustable handle is in being able to do all thi...

Quite likely the borer has alternate hosts in the yard,or maybe even next door. Well, I figured the zapper was worth a try. Here's last night's sample. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v188/nekonomad/plantaholic/plantaholic0112A.jpg enlarge Still no show for the macronoctua onusta .
