Re: Montana Aureomarginata is up!

Thanks, Chris. I piled a foot of leaves on the whole bed, hopefully they won't blow off but I 'm not going to worry about it.

Montana Aureomarginata is up!

We've had a really warm January with temperatures in the 50s and 60s andMontana Aureomarginata is up about three inches! Way too early. Crazy plant. But we're faciing another arctic freeze in another week--what do you think? Should I put a couple shovelsful of sand over it and mulch it heavily with ...

Re: Hostas of the Year - 2015 and 2016

I've had Curly Fries for three years now, well four this spring. It's done really well through two years of drought, extreme heat, and last winter's deep cold, coming up this spring with a gusto. Not a traditional looking hosta but I think it's cute. It looked good all season, getting that bleached ...

Re: Garden Appreciation!

From the time the daffodils start blooming in the woods, which borders our street, until the 300' long iris border is done blooming, cars slow down, people use our street for their morning walks, and occasionally someone stops to take pictures. Very seldon does anyone say anything unless I happen to...

Re: What is this?

I read the letter Opel sent out. They did send the hosta tissue to their state lab, and they did test positive for a bacterial soft rot. They don't know how it started, they said, maybe because of the cold winter, maybe it came in, in the liners, maybe this or that. In other words, they haven't a cl...

Re: What is this?

The wholesale grower (Opel) sent out a letter to all the nurseries it supplies with the information, and instructions for treatment. I haven't seen the letter yet, but I will in a day or so. I'll keep this updated when I find out more information. I aaume they have tested the plants. The nursery whe...

Re: How concerned should I be?

We got about an inch down here in Joplin. Most of it has melted and a trip down thru the gardens didn't show me any damage, but I guess when the sun comes out we will see. It didn't get down below 33 here last night so I think the snow protected everything. There were 5" on the ground about 20 miles...

Re: What is this?

Well according to the grower, this is actually bacterial stem rot. Curable with a dose of streptomycin followed by a thorough soaking of a product called "Cease". Very contagious, so if you have already bought a hosta in a square 4" green pot with an Opel Grower label, take it back to the nursery wh...

Re: What is this?

That one just happens to be American Halo, but there are several other varieties that don't have flower stalks and have the same kind of damage, all of their leaves just coming off. The only ones that don't were not unfurled when they came in. I guess I'll just wait and see with the ones in the gard...

Re: What is this?

I think you may be right, Chris. These were in a shipment of perennials that had been frozen, some of the plants still had ice crystals in them. I wondered if it might not be environmental. We will be contacting the wholesaler, I just wanted to be armed with some info before we did. Since some of th...

What is this?

What is going on with this plant? One of a shipment that came from a wholesaler/grower this spring. Just a few of the plants showed these symptoms at first, but now more in the same shipment are. Don't think it is crown rot, no mushy crowns or fungus fibers. Nematodes? I researched every hosta disea...

Re: gardens are done for the season

No snow yet, we haven't even had a hard freeze. Most of the hostas are pretty well faded except the ones that have unripe seed pods, they are still green. Temps in the 70's all week. Until today.. Raining now, temps expected to drop into the lower 20' this evening. Rain maybe turning to snow, lookin...

I use a grease pencil on my labels, zinc and otherwise. It doesn't fade but you can scrub it off if you need to. I buy them at the local office supply.

Re: Extreme heat & drought's effects

Some of mine completely disappeared too in the heat and drought. I carefully dug down to see if they were gone forever or not, and found most of them still there but dormant. If they follow last year's example (after the 2011 drought), next year some of them will come up smaller again. I think it wi...

II'm a follower of the AHS page, for one, lol! A lot of hybridizers and growers that we are all familiar with, Don Dean for one. A great page to follow what is going on with the AHS. HostaLaVista is another good one, a lot of the same people who are on the AHS page are there too. Both very active. T...

Re: Sale at Hallson!!!

Thanks, Chris, I'll be looking everything over.

As for my hosta purchases, in the last 6 months DH has bought a new computer, a smoker, a new barbecue grill, a Nook, and a new pickup. I don't want to hear any complaints about my garden budget.

Re: Doggone critters!!!

We keep setting a trap hoping to catch the groundhog that raids the hostas occasionally but the box turtles keep getting in there and tripping it. They love cantelope too! :???:
