Re: Saving Olive

Put her in a big pot and move her to a more sheltered location for the first few months. Then return her to her 'home' after the shade returns and replant her or keep her in the pot buried in the ground.

Re: Deer Out????

Sorry, I can't help you, Rosemarie. Living in the city, I don't see many deer in my neighborhood. Although last fall I looked out my back window and low and behold, there lay a deer in the middle of my backyard!! I was amazed!! I don't know how long he lay there, but by the time I found a camera wit...

Re: Hosta and Goldenrain tree

What about a redbud tree, or better yet the purple-leaved redbud, 'Forest Pansy'? I always find those beautiful when planted together along a bank or pathway. Hopefully others can chime in regarding root competition, as I don't have any hostas planted under my redbud. The Korean spice viburnum is an...

Re: Hosta 'World Cup'

Ann, It looks like a real keeper to me! I think I'd hang on to it for a few years and see what it does! With all of the thunderstorms we get around here every spring, I'd have to find a nice sheltered spot for it. Those taller, vase-shaped hostas tend to really get beat up here :-( Adding it to my w...

Re: Digging up yewbushes

Hi Ellen,

If you can get a truck near the bushes, you can tie a chain around the stumps and yank them out with the truck. This works best, of course, after you've had some rain.

Fertilizing in the fall?

Hi folks,

This is the time of year when I transplant my containerized hostas back into the ground for the long winter nap. Is it a bad idea to mix some Holly Tone into the dirt as I transplant?

Ann,

My plants from the Halcyon family are also still looking good this time of year. As for the rest of them.... well, let's just say I'm looking forward to that first frost later this week :-)

Simply beautiful! So what's your secret?

But why can't you take it with you? Or take at least half of it with you?

Re: Container growing question

Hi Sweetee, I also enjoy growing some of my hostas in containers, but I don't leave them there over the winter. I plant them into the ground back in the corner of my yard. Sometimes, I'll leave them in the pot but sink the pot into a hole, although that can be dangerous, especially if the winter is ...

Tolle Bilder, Stefan! Ich wett', die Schnecken haben das kühlere Wetter auch gern. :) Was tust du dagegen eigentlich? Die Schnecken hier haben gar keine Häuschen und werden nie so groß wie bei euch (Gott sei dank!) Great pics, Stefan. I bet that the slugs are also enjoying the cooler weather. What d...

Re: Miracle Grow Moisture Control potting soil

I think it might be better suited for thirsty annuals in a hot climate. Even then, I think I'd add some pine bark fines to it to improve drainage. I'd never use it with perennials, however. Heard too many horror stories just like yours!

I'm not sure you can have your cake and eat it, too.

Personally, I'd much prefer the privacy afforded by the arborvitae hedge year-round than an increase in air circulation, especially if a busy street were present.

It's headed into oblivion, no doubt, because the pics of her in the Hosta Library are so bad. Maybe if your pic here was used in the Hosta Library, more folks would take notice of her. :D

Very pretty, Ann! Which of yours seem to do best, i.e. need dividing the most often? Do you grow many in full sun?

I'm in the process of lifting quite a few, amending the soil some more, and setting them a bit higher in the hole this time around.
