Re: Summer hosta planting for 2013/2014

Sum of All adds great color to deep shade. I have a large collection of Sum & Substance progeny and it's the only member of the family that will not tolerate any sun here in West Michigan, not even morning sun. Here's mine growing in deep shade in a pot that is stuck to the ground because the Maple ...

6 days in the shade and hypoleuca has three new leaves! What a big difference.

Re: hypoleuca

Chris, I bought mine at your nursery. We just potted it up and moved it in the shade.

I know that the hosta library says this one can take sun but it doesn't seem to be taking it in our gardens, and, I grow a ton of hostas in the sun.

hypoleuca

I'm having a terrible time growing this one. Every year the first couple of leaves get hit by frost and then it looks horrible the rest of the year.

Any ideas on growing this one?

Here's my Nightlife I bought at Hallsons in July 2011. No need to worry about the slugs putting holes in this one!

If it's still one eye next year Owen, I would plant it deeper.

Re: One Eyed Empress Wu

Owen, here's a picture of my Empress Wu planted in the fall of 2010 that I took today. I counted 10 eyes. When I compared mine to yours, I noticed that mine was planted deeper than yours. I'm wondering if that's why yours is staying a one eyed wonder. http://i768.photobucket.com/albums/xx330/gesila9...

Re: One Eyed Empress Wu

Me too Paul. I bought mine in the fall of 2010, it had 9 eyes in 2012. As I recall, it took over took weeks for all 9 eyes to come up. So far, it has 9 this year, but they are nice and plump, I'm thinking more will come up as the weather warms up. The one I'm growing in full sun has 12 eyes this yea...

Without a doubt, my Niagara Falls was the show stopper. The transformation from it's first year to second was amazing:

Re: O'Brien's Hostas Season's End Sale

Nice list Phil. I bought Blue Moon in 2011 -- 30 eyes. It faded to only two eyes this year. Not sure what I did wrong with it. My Dick Ward takes tons of sun. Powder Blue is a great grower and one of the nices blues in my garden. Royal Flush is beautiful, I'm waiting for mine to grow! My Sum of All ...

Third year in our gardens. This one is a slow, but steady grower. On the edge of the garden, so the wind and rabbits seem to damage it every year.

I potted my Gunther's Prize up to keep it from the rabbits. I sat this one out in full sun this summer. It grew three new shoots. I'm looking forward to it being a nice sized plant next spring.

Re: Alex Summers

I got mine as a bonus hosta from Chris in the fall of 2010. Except for a little nibble from the rabbit, this one is almost perfect despite being in full sun and an area that was infested by slugs this summer. Re: Daily Hosta #5 - 'Moonstruck' - Add your pics

Ann, I'm not sure if it's the pot or the fact that Moonstruck is not competing with Maple tree roots. But I really like that the slugs didn't chew this one up this year. There was barely anything left to the leaves after the slugs got to it last year.
