Re: Looking forward to spring, but worried about damage

Kevin. no cracks around my area. it was hot summer though.

I am still worried about some of my pots, tilt to its side. I wonder how they handle his freeze and thaw as well.

i was told they has less chance than the ones on the ground. Anyone has experience on freeze and thaw in pots?

Re: First success at Hosta Seed Germination

Hi Chris, Thanks for inspiring me. My goal is really to re-create the older hosta genetic pool, as I was looking at creating a Hosta Pioneer Garden too. It may just be full of Plain Jane hosta, but I salute these old ones, as they are usually easy going. To bring back the older genetic pool means we...

Re: Looking forward to spring, but worried about damage

you have a very lovely hosta. I hope they will recover this season. Here in Zone 5, we have thaw and frozen again.

I won't expect a lot from my small and young hosta garden, but if it does ....I hide them and plant coleus over it for colors.

First success at Hosta Seed Germination

This effort is a personal one, so probably does not belong to the Hybridizing forum. While my attempt to germinate hosta seeds last summer was a failure, I manage to germinate one batch of seeds this fall 2011. Stroke of luck or maybe because it is a very fresh seed given to me by my neighbor. It is...

Re: Winter?

Zone 5 here in Ottawa. All my hosta are buried under snow in my backyard. It is mild as well, we got like -1C this week, so it thawed a little bit. I have not seen any slugs wondering in the snow, but i hope this milder winter kill the eggs. Chris: do you think the snow cover killed slug eggs, or th...

Ann: this was the one I got from you this spring. Thanks a bunch, this little hosta just survive in the shade, under the shade of Hosta Guacamole. Re: Has anyone overwintered inside the house?

Hi Angelina, Soilless mix is potting soil without any dirt or humus in it. Canadian peat moss, perlite, and pine bark is my mix of choice. Perlite and the bark help to aerate and break up the peat moss. Vermiculite is only needed in mixes that need to hold more moisture, so I don't use that at all....

Chris: what is soil less mix? Do you just mix perlite, vermaculite, peat moss .....whatever else, no potting soil?

Re: Has anyone overwintered inside the house?

I was looking for this one too. I have the Heuchera Sanguina Firely and it was too big - a 2 gallon pot. So I split it in half; the half went in the garden, the remaining half in a flower vase. Now, I want to plant the remaining ones in small pots, and keep in the basement for winter. I have perlite...

Hoya Carnosa

anyone who loves Hoya here? I find them hard to find in canada. a neighbor of mine said that his plant was from david suzukis family, his parents were neighbors in a small town of ontario.

i would like to acquire some cuttings if anyone have some. I'll pay for cost plus shipping.

The Vinca grows faster than my single Praying Hands.
I trimmed the vinca down, and it is now a nice perennial pot.
