Great idea. I've seen it once before, on a fence, in a garden. Yours looks magical!

Re: Sugar Daddy

I've grown five Sugar Daddy hostas for about 8 years. Yes, they grow slow. But that's not their problem. They come up beautiful in the early spring, with wide yellow margins. As soon as the leaves fully unfurl and spread out, the yellow margins begin to turn soft and limp and brown. In about two wee...

Re: Rot from frost damage to hostas

This year's follow-up: The affected plants recovered, slowly, last season. The group that was damaged the most is a large wave of Lancifolia (13 large, mature clumps). I have several waves of lancifolia on the hill behind my house, along with several hundred other hostas and companion plants. This y...

Re: Buying hostas from a careless nursery

Follow-up:
Walters Gardens replied. They do not monitor the wholesale growers who buy their baby hostas.
There are just too many growers. I'll quarantine the Wheee! plants that I bought.

Re: Buying hostas from a careless nursery

If the tag and pot say Proven Winners, does that mean clean tissue culture specimens originated with Proven Winners but were sent to growers, who might or might not have been careful? Or does it mean Proven Winners grew each plant at a Proven Winner site, then sent them to the nurseries? It looks li...

Buying hostas from a careless nursery

Today I did something I promised myself I'd never do. I bought two "Wheee!" hostas from a nursery that has been selling HVX-infected hostas. I bought them because they were labelled "Proven Winners" in the hope that the label means the growers are held to a high standard and that they must check for...

Re: Curly, thick, yellow rims, large hosta - NOID!

Just looked it up.
Yep, that's it.

Must have, must have. Got suggestions on where to get a (not-tiny) version of this plant?
I'm in the Boston area.

Re: Potted Hostas

Follow-up: Two winters ago I left the hostas in pots outside through the winter. They suffered. Some died, others shrank. I think this happened in the spring when the snow cover on the pots melted, then froze, then melted, then froze, then melted, then ... well, you get the idea. The following winte...

Re: Rot from frost damage to hostas

Follow-up: The frost-bitten,rotted hostas have survived, but in an altered state. They shrank; I suspect the roots shriveled up when the leaves got gooey and dropped off. The leaves that survived got attacked by brown spot. I waited and watched, and chose not to spray. More leaves fell off from the ...

Curly, thick, yellow rims, large hosta - NOID!

Does anyone know what this magnificent specimen is? I've never seen a twirly hosta with such large, dense, stiff leaves. Their shape is unexpected. They have very yellow rims, with yellowish-green centers. (The colors on my computer screen do not exactly match the actual colors; I'm not sure what ot...

Re: Rot from frost damage to hostas

Oh, I see Chris you have answered. I don't get notified in my email about replies; I'll see if that's an option in this forum. Since this all started to happen, I've checked out the plants every few days. The gooey rotten parts simply dried out and I stopped worrying. Then I noticed an entire wave o...
