Re: American Hosta Society Auction going on now
I think it's funny how peoples compulsiveness brings up the prices. $100 SO FAR for 3 plants at the auction and if you bought them directly from the donor you'd pay $92. (don't give me it's an auction to raise money excuss, it's just as important if not more important to keep these nurseries in busi...

Re: Would you believe, a hosta that is NOT in the Hostapedia!
Mine looked to be about a 2nd yr TC so it's pretty small compaired to the pic they show so I'm not really sure if it is or not. How to say it nicely but I'm sure their full of it. All hostas need dormancy but they say it can be grown in Florida. They contradict themselves in the article.

Re: Would you believe, a hosta that is NOT in the Hostapedia!
It was the last one for me to turn brown this year and everytime I look at it , it just makes me laugh...I picked up one last summer called "sun" that a local grower had that the distributer claimed could take a full day of sun, the dist. was located in a town near Boulder so I figured I'd drive out...

Glad nobody told me NBC grew whites because I've grown seedlings from it yearly for atleast 6 years, and have seed pods on it this year, nothing special out of it just plain jane greens but goes to show , never know what your gonna get.

Re: The drought of '09
Weird weather everywhere this year, were actually hoping for no more rain for a while. Went camping this weekend and the weather was so bad between the rain, hail and wind it broke both of my tents and we had to sleep in my truck. We've had very few 90 degree days and a lot of rain. Usually were the...

Re: 5 quick questions of you
Went to a plant auction at a local nursery and they got to the hostas and nobody bid on them so I bid a quarter for them , it was at my first house so I needed some plants to decorate the place. They weren't very big but after a few years they grew and I liked them. Plus everybody said you can't gro...

Re: Curious - what makes one a "hybridizer"?
I'm with yeh Dave, I have 1 now thats driving me nuts. I really like it but just didn't think it would be anything special so I wrote the tag in pencil thinking I'd never do anything with it since most likely it was going to the compost pile anyways. And after 5 years I can't remember the cross and ...

Re: Curious - what makes one a "hybridizer"?
I think a lot of people are confussing Hybridizer and Hybrid , making the meaning almost the same thing. By definition which is simple. Hybridizer: to produce or cause to produce hybrids; crossbreed: key words produce or cause. Definition of produce: to make or create something. Makes things simple....

Re: Seaweed liquid supplement
I've used seaweed for years on my plants. I take a tub and use a aquarium pump for the oxygen and let it set in the sun for 3 days replacing the evaporated water. I like to add alfalfa and other benificial ingrediants , some that shouldn't be too close to the house . Seaweed is great for natural PGR...

Re: Curious - what makes one a "hybridizer"?
Sugar maybe it's just me but I'd find it insulting for somebody to call themselves a hybridizer when all they are is a seed grower. Go out to your hostas for a few hours in the morning before you go work a 10 hour day. Go through all the steps I listed before. Wait 5 years just to realise that the h...

Re: Curious - what makes one a "hybridizer"?
To me a hybridizer is someone who wakes up early to beat the bees to the flowers, puts wifes old panty hose over the flower to keep the bees off the flower, puts a label on the flower to remember whats what. Sows the seeds and grows them over the winter, paying more for the electricity bill. Waits 5...

Re: Hallson's h.Radiant Star
You collect hostas for soo long and get soo many of them you lose track of what is what, I go out to the garden and see a hosta and forget what it is let alone that I even had it and have to go look at the map to see what it is because the label is now blank, but I always remember the hostas that st...
