Yes the exterior of both is red with interior a pinkish lavender, but I hope to improve on that. :D

Re: Update on Red flowered Hosta progress

Hi Ed, I am posting a couple of pictures of another red flowered seedling with a similar but slightly different family background. The lineage on this one is: 21-45 19-135-2 ((First Blush X OP)#9 X Dostoyevsky selfed -2017) X 18-136-2 (Betsy King X (Dostoyevsky selfed #1)) As previously stated, the ...

Re: Update on Red flowered Hosta progress

Yes the lineage is: 21-40 2018 (First Blush X (Dostoyevsky selfed #1)) X 20-149-5 (Beilstein A 148 RED FLOWER #2 XOP) I purchased open pollinated seeds from Doug and grew those out and selected what I thought were the best and they were crossed onto a seedling resulting from seeds that I got from yo...

Update on Red flowered Hosta progress

I attempted to post this a few days ago and it apparently was lost in cyberspace. So here goes again. This is one of my best red flowers to date. I have a hard time getting the red to show up on my camera, this is the as close to the real thing so far. The red is even a little more intense and inter...

Fragrant Flower

Hi all, Just wanted to post these pictures of my Guacamole X(Betsy King X (DXD#1)) seedling's flower. Not red but, it is large and it's fragrant.

Re: Another red margined seedling

I just thought that I would post a few pictures of three seedlings (I have six total) that surprised me. They are from an OP First Blush pod parent and plantaginea pollen. What is surprising is the Beet Salad red edge, I have read that plantaginea resists red petioles. The first picture is the same ...

Re: Some thoughts on sterile hostas

Chris, I had the same experience with Blue Angel, but Guardian Angel has set huge amounts of open pollinated seed. Like you I like to know the background of my hostas, although on occasion I will use OP or unknown plants if they will further my plan. An example, I usually buy seeds from Doug Beilste...

Some thoughts on sterile hostas

9-13-2019 I just thought I would share my experiences, thoughts and observations regarding “sterile’hostas and hybridization. When I am planning my strategy, I try to do my homework/research and online information is a big part of it. So when someone registers a hosta as unknown, seedling X seedling...

Seed Auction

Hello, I was just wondering if anyone is bidding on seeds in The Hosta Seed Growers Annual Seed Auction. The auction ends on Sunday. I received my seeds from Doug and Mardy Beilstein on Monday, I have nearly all of my seed sown, some seedlings are in the basement grow area, hopefully more to come. H...

Re: Red Flowered hosta?

Hello Tigger, My guess is that the plant will be similar to H. War and Peace (J Moore NR) it has similar background, the leaves are just plain jane green. Ed McHugh has H. Dostoyevsky which is one of two of the great grandparents and has been posted on this forum https://www.perennialreference.com/f...

Red Flowered hosta?

Just wanted to post pictures of my best effort to date. Some of these were taken with my camera and some with my iPhone. I would have liked to have had a little darker red, but we work with what the Good Lord gives us. Maybe next year.

Re: Hosta Identification 3

Hello Andrea, I saw your question on Facebook American Hosta Soceity public page and since I don't/won't do Facebook I'll post here it is the same plant, anyway I had a "light bulb moment". Could the plant in question possibly be H. "Waiting in Vein"? The picture in the Hosta Library is more yellow ...

Re: Hosta Identification 3

Hi ademink, I don't have any pictures of the flower scapes, but the last black and white photo appeared on page 46 of issue 14 of 1983 Hosta Journal. There is another article about Peter Ruh with a picture of near six foot scapes, but I don't have time to locate it right now. As you can see the scap...

Re: Hosta Identification 3

I don't think it is Tall Boy, you would easily know by the very tall flower scapes. My Tall Boy stands out due to the height of the scapes.

Re: Why we do it

Well here is an update, after being outside in the sunshine this "baby" seems to be doing well all the while remaining very small. I have included pictures. I'm hoping to get it to flower this year, if Murphy will leave me alone. :D

Re: This year's babies

Well I'm back again with pictures of the best First Blush seedling that came from a friend, he made the cross and then gave me some of the seeds. Clockwise from the top left, Friday April 5 then Sunday and the last two were taken today April 9. You can see how quickly the leaf color developed. Now i...

Re: This year's babies

Hi Chris, yes I have attempted to use Tickle Me Pink and haven't been able to get any seed set on my selected crosses. I am also attempting to use Lipstick Blonde in my breeding attempts,as both of these hostas show the red margin. Just as with First Blush a generous helping of sun and cooler temper...
