Re: Is this a form of "bleed"

NoAdvanceToNecrosis.jpg Ed, I can't tell the variety but this looks like it could be the results of edema, like in Frances Williams. We just put together a talk on hosta pests and diseases for the Maine Hosta Society and showed a series of photos detailing the effects of edema in a straight timelin...

Re: Lemon Lime- lutescent or viridescent?

As you can see in the two pictures from here, it is brighter on emergence. These do burn in the sun, though. They would get greener in shade.

Re: Blue-flowered H.'St. Bernadette'

Hi All, St. Bernadette was actually TCed by Jon's daughter Rachel, who started up a TC lab then apparently abandoned it after a couple years and doesn't respond to inquiries. Word is that the plants all died. There are still some OS pieces out there, but I've heard that the flowers weren't that colo...

Re: Lutescent or Viridescent?

Hi Don, Gold hostas are either lutescent or viridescent to varying degrees. Lutescence only comes from sieboldiana/Tokudama genes. In all other species the gold ones are viridescent. Hybrids between lutescent and viridescent plants can be either. Which a seedling is is obvious from the first few lea...

Re: Hosta 'City Boy'?

Hi Don, Not sure if you're still looking, but it was Matt Caudle. A while back there was a guy named Al Belk that was scamming people on Ebay. Don't remember what the scams were, but he was in North Carolina and got a lot of stuff from Leonard Jones' nursery when it closed. After people caught on to...

Iron Phosphate Slug Baits

Hi All, Several people have recently mentioned seeing birds eating the pellets of the iron phosphate slug baits. Two in comments under the Jeff Gilman blog post said that the birds disappeared and stopped eating from the bird feeders. I'm wondering if others have seen this happening too. Has anyone ...

Re: Nemakill

Thank you David for trying to get the actual report of the study out where people can see it. Hopefully it won't be confined to a Members Only part of the AHS website. It will be good to see the genuine and truthful report after all the Mortko/Deutekom sales pitch nonsense. It is a shame you weren't...

Re: Nemakill

David, I'm curious about the first part. Dr. Grewal has published quite a few papers at this point, so he would cretainly do a professional job I would think. He is the one writing it, isn't he? I certainly don't think your reputation is tarnished by what Mortko and Deutekom did. You have no control...

Re: Nemakill

Lukas, I do not think you technically did anything wrong with your promotional brochure in which you quoted Mortko and Deutekom saying that Nemakill gives "100% control of this pest in hosta". After all you were only quoting them. What they said wasn't true as it is now clear no experiments had even...

Re: WARNING: deceptive HGTV perennials

Hi All, The problem with this whole thing in my opinion is that it is just intended to trick people into thinking they are offering their own line of new hostas. It is really hitting bottom. They offer nothing of substance, just cheaply bought hosta cultivars dressed up in different pots, labels, et...

Re: Nemakill

David, in slightly more than a month the AHS convention will feature Dr. Grewal giving a verbal presentation on the nematode research. Do you know if the paper report will be out before the convention? I'm sure people will have questions, and it would be nice to read the report first. It's always go...

Not HVX, but what is it?

Hi All, Thought you might find this photo interesting. It's from a sport/reversion on Ruffled Mouse Ears that looked perfectly normal last year. I believe this to be some kind of odd cold damage, but can't say anything for sure other than it did not test positive for HVX. Any ideas Chris? .......Bill

Re: Nemakill

David, until we see the info on both the control plants and the verification of whether the test plants had nematodes to begin with, we don't have any idea if the Nemakill prevented nematodes from entering the other 11 or if there were no nematodes there to kill. I'm sure you understand that, so we'...

Re: Nemakill

Hi Lucas, I haven't used Nemakill, and only one person here has. See post from "treepep". My issue is with AHS officers claiming it did things it didn't do, specifically claiming it offered "100% control in hostas" before it was ever tested on hostas. There was a pre-emergent drench test done on act...

Re: Nemakill

David, on another forum where people aren't allowed to talk if the moderator doesn't like it, you asked a question about why I thought the Nemakill people didn't do any testing on hostas before marketing their product. To answer, they apparently began marketing their product to the ag industry as a ...

Re: Nemakill

Regarding preventative drench, it isn't very clear at this time when the nematodes go up into the plant, or for how long a period. It would be temperature and weather dependent, so very fluid and not easy to say with any certainty. I suggested experiments along those lines, but Mortko ignored it. Ha...

Re: Nemakill

OK, looks like they did the preventative drench test after all. Mortko was asked specifically about this at their presentation at Hosta College, and he denied it. He did say dormant plants were drenched but specifically said they were not checked later to see if they had nematodes. Any idea why he w...

Re: Nemakill

David, This forum debate is about the AHS officers, who are running a non-profit educational society, promoting an unknown and untested product that bypasses all EPA regulations for pesticides. I'm not the one presenting these results as a "summary of the key findings of the study" - they are. They ...

Re: Nemakill

David, I'm sorry, but WTF? Mortko is the one who got together with Grewal and put this study together, choosing the experiments back in 2012. This study is Mortko's "baby". The contract was signed before anybody other than a few AHS officers knew what was in there. The proposal described a drench te...

Re: Nemakill

In a small separate section of the big final summary, Mortko and Deutekom in their sales pitch for Nemakill provide a truly bizarre cost comparison that greatly misrepresents the products. For Pylon, they say that a $450 pint (16oz.) of concentrate will make 12.5 gallons. The reality is that on the ...
