George those seedlings are great :D ! I hope you'll keep posting their progress, its fascinating for someone liike myself who has never grown hosta and doesn't know what to expect. Quick question. Did you start the seeds in the flats they're in, or did you transplant to what's in the picture (I hope...

That is a beautiful hosta! Being a potter, I can see why you gave it that name.

Eastwood2007, The soup spoon episode is funny in retrospect. Seeing a little old white haired lady in her house coat squatting in the hosta patch is a picture forever imprinted on my brain. I just wonder how many kitchen drawers she went through before she found the spoon. My mom had gone in to use ...

This is going to sound petty  , but I really don't like getting plants as gifts that don't fit into my landscape plan. My brother gave me 4 lilac bushes and I really didn't have anywhere to put them, but since they were a gift (for my b-day) I had to find a spot. He's given me peonies, climbi...

Being totally partial to piecrust edges, that pic just makes me drool. Beautiful host Jim. And if I might ask, what size hosta is that one?

Thanks, Donna

Hi Wanda, Thanks for the "push" to update the garden maps, its something I've put off since the onset of the holidays a few months ago (and Spring is next week :bd: !!!!). I have hand drawn maps on grid paper too, but this past August I took digital pics of my beds, then edited the pics and added bu...

Matt, Thanks for the pointer to Mr.Leafmould's input on crossing yellows and blues. Question...if a yy is "dead", does the same hold true for a bb? Or is blue a different story? :hmm:

Matt, I love the traits you're looking to hybridize toward. Salute is a good choice, although mine has never set seed. I'm still wondering which is the dominant parent for physical traits. I know color variations are easier to obtain with a streaked pod parent, but.... So say you want an upright blu...

Wow, those are traits I hadn't even thought about. Very nice! I especially like the thought of having a big yellow cupped hosta with intense piecrusting. I'd want to see one with an ovate or round leaf shape (like S&S?). Typically, how long does it take to attain what you're looking for? Years, deca...

Hybridizing hostas

Stemming from the good report John gave about the Michigan happening with Kent, it made me stop and think of the traits I'd try to emphasize. If you were into hybridizing hostas, what traits would you want to see as a result of your breeding program? Now, I don't know the process to attain these tra...

Wow Curtis! Didn't realize you'd harvested that many seed pods. Good for you! I want to see a pic of your kitchen table, I'll bet there are pods everywhere. :D

Are any pods forming on MM?? Mine is flowering, pollen is viable, but no pods.
