Yellow-shafted Flicker

When we first moved here almost 29 years ago, we used to see flickers all over the place. Now we have just the occasional visitor. On this icy morning it looks like the suet tastes mighty good!

Last year vs. this year

For lack of better things to do, I'll post some of last year's photos of hostas I (particularly) eagerly anticipate seeing again. 'Frost Giant' shows great promise and I hope it will have a couple more eyes and be a fuller plant.

Avian predators in winter

SharpShinnedHawk3.jpg SharpShinnedHawk.jpg The sharp-shinned hawk hangs out by the bird feeders. Kestrelmale4-4.jpg Kestrelmale4-4-2.jpg The male kestrel was caught by men who were banding them. There was a female nearby as well, but my arrival at home kept her from coming down to the trap. Viktoria

Re: The ground is still frozen...

The ground is still frozen here in Upstate New York but that should change within the next few days. Rain is forecast just about every day, though, which will prevent the ground from warming up to the point that I can start digging hostas. Many of them need to be moved and/or divided. We moved here ...

Re: American Choo Choo

A beautiful hosta by any other name looks just as good. Sorry, Will.

No reversions here of either of the two, although I have only grown 'American Choo Choo' for two seasons. Because of lack of maturity (of ACC, not mine), I have not compared the two side by side.

Re: Canary corydalis not blooming

Various web sites give a hardiness rating to zones 6-7. Other information is inconsistent. Has your "mother" plant survived the winter or are you only seeing seedlings; those might not bloom the first year. Maybe you should just stick to good old Corydalis lutea . It is definitely hardy in zone 5 an...

Re: We did okay

We were on the fringe of the storm and, despite dire forecasts, had <1" of rain and no wind damage. Watching the news, what amazes me is that, despite plenty of warning, many people were simply in denial and unprepared. In a worst case scenario, we had three generators and fuel to run them for days,...

It is the mind that is going! I can see it running away in the background of the last photo.
