Moving daffodils - is a missed year flowering common?
About 3 years ago (2010), we moved to a new place..well, new for us but it's 45 years old. I htink most of the flowers were probably planted sometime around then or at least in the first 10-20 years after that. Let's just say they're mature;) The subject at hand is daffodils - there were a number of...

Re: New seedlings - no idea what I'm doing;)
The picture isn't worth taking...nothing but weeds;( The plants are now big enough that most of them are pretty positively identified.

Re: Leaves with an extra "glow" on them.
That's a lot like how the leaves of my hosta with Southern Blight started. Pretty soon, they were all "a glow". You might want to make sure those leaves aren't completely disconnected from the plant. With mine, they basically fell off in my hand if I touched them to look at them. I've been told that...

Re: June - is this crown rot?
Is this what I'm looking for: http://www.lowes.com/pd_100375-24182-701250_0__?productId=3005265&Ntt=bayer+disease&pl=1¤tURL=&facetInfo= It doesn't specifically mention either hostas or Southern Blight but, it does mention fungal diseases. BTW, I just found more damage on two other hosta plants...

Re: June - is this crown rot?
We've been on vacation this week..mostly out of the area including college drop-offs. I think I'll try to find some of that Bayer Disease Control. Now that I'm digging into this, I recall seeing some mulch that had this "white stuff" this spring. It may not have been Southern Blight but I'm a bit su...

Re: June - is this crown rot?
OK, great! Less work is always better;)
I did look at it a little more and scrape some mulch back (not spread all over though) and when I did, the remaining leaves all fell out. I threw 'em in the trash can.

Re: June - is this crown rot?
So, I guess the solution is 10% bleach-water and soak the entire affected area well?

...or dig it up, clean it and re-plant it...maybe both.

June - is this crown rot? - No. Southern Blight
We planted 2 June last year and they both looked good up till about a week ago. Then, the one side of one plant started to die. We left for a few days vacation on Sunday about about half the plant looked bad...it's worse now. This is a rather dry bank under some old pine trees so I watered it fairly...

Another idea for you - you're gonna be sorry you asked;) I just got a mailing from the Arbor Day Foundation - if you join, you can get 10 trees for 10 bucks, plus some other stuff...actually more like 12 trees and a book;) They are TINY trees - probably about a foot tall. But, 10 trees for 10 bucks....

Re: i need ideas...
bhoops, Total of 2.75 acres, probably about an acre in that picture. A couple mature, high-trimmed trees make it look bigger I think. It's interesting to see serviceberry mentioned. We have some of that. It has these little tiny berries - I've never seen anything eating them but, they're away from t...

Re: i need ideas...
We have a bunch of pecan trees on our property. One nice thing about hardwoods is that they make a nice canopy. They don't have heavy leaf cover so the grass under them grows well. Ours are trimmed WAY up....20' or more to the first branch. The pecans grind up quickly with the mower. We also have Bl...

Re: New seedlings - no idea what I'm doing;)
They've grown more in the last couple days...in a week, they might be recognizable. I really think that most of them are actually hosta plants. I'm gonna just let everything grow unless it's obviously not a hosta. Part of the reason for the pictures is just to document what they look like as they gr...

Splitting Black-eyed Susan - Indian Summer
Last summer, we got a Black-eyed Susan of the Indian Summer variety. We got two addtional ones this summer. It has larger blooms and they hold on for quite a long time...much longer than other varieties. One other difference, they don't seem to spread the same. The "normal" ones, you can dig up a cl...

New seedlings - no idea what I'm doing;)
Well, 12 days ago I planted a bunch of seeds from Viola Ann. I think they've come up...or some weeds. I planted the seeds in sections for each type. In retrospect, I should have planted them a seed at a time in distinct rows. I think that would have helped me know what is hosta and what is weeds..ma...

Re: Doggone critters!!!
As far as groundhogs go, we've been very sucessfull with a simple foot trap in their entrance borrow with a few leaves laid over it. They don't seem to be the brightest or most careful animals around.

Daisies - how much to deadhead
We got some daisies from a friend last fall. They're doing well...in fact, they look like they've been there for years. My wife would like to see them expand. So, should we deadhead or does that keep them from dropping seed and expanding? And, if we do want to leave some go to seed, is it better to ...

Re: transplanting hosta plants too late
Thanks for the IDs! The three around the Sum and Substance are all from the same clump I believe. Two of the three have a couple half-white leaves. They haven't flowered yet, nor has the Guacamole that we have. We will have to keep an eye on once it blooms. Looking at the pictures on the hosta compa...
