Re: Blue-flowered H.'St. Bernadette'

Don, below is what you posted in a thread on another forum. John Soucek of Avon, Ohio emailed me the following information on 5-11-12: "I noticed your article on the flower color with the pics from Jerry Bryant- the hosta pictured will be registered as 'St. Bernadette' and was hybridized by my daugh...

Re: Hosta Comparison routine updated

There's a further update to the routine, Bill and Carol have been adding quite a number of both new pictures and new varieties. Kudos to them! Wouldn't be at all surprised to see the total going well over 6500 by the time they're done...

Re: Happy T Day to everyone and H. Quill question

Waldo, Happy Thanksgiving! Fair question, the comment you're referring to however is not on the HL itself, it is in the link to Hugo Philips' site . Hugo collects the comments he shows from various commercial sites offering the plant in question for sale, there's no real way of attributing the comme...

Re: A new addition...

Chris, I'm anxious to see how it performs next year. It would have come from an in-ground growing scenario and as the picture clearly shows I have it in a 3 gallon pot. That drastic change impacts root growth and as a result of course overall growth. The new leaves it has grown since I've had it are...

Re: A new addition...

This is what Don says: 'Rhino Gold' is the all-gold TC sport of 'Rhino Hide'. I brought a couple home from Walters Gardens who had 'Rhino Hide' TC-ed. It is slow growing and lacks the superb substance of 'Rhino Hide', 'Rhino Blue', and 'Rhino Tuff' (other TC sports). Dr. Zonneveld tested 'Rhino Gold...

Re: A new addition...

I'm waiting for a response from Don to give me some further clarification on origin, commercial status etc. But yes, it should be in the index as 'Rhino Gold'.

Re: A new addition...

It would appear as if there's a 'Rhino Hide ' connection, see Don's original post asking for name input on a different seedling of his that looks quite a bit like this one. He says about halfway through the thread that there is indeed an all-yellow sport of 'Rhino Hide' called 'Rhino Gold', the subj...

Re: A new addition...

Yes, it came from Don Rawson. That's all I can tell you right now, have no further details. Judging from the size of the leaves and the roots I'd say it's a division off a plant that's at least 5 years old. No doubt there's a 'Rhino Hide' connection, just not sure what.

Re: Don Rawson's Hosta Lists

Been rather swamped with things, but, got an e-mail from my web host indicating they'd had a catastrophic system failure on the 29th with a controller and ended having to run a complete restore from back-ups, took a while of course. We're up-n-running again though! Question for those who use the lis...

Re: Has anyone seen this for sale Oil on Canvas Hosta

If the picture you posted is from the website's for sale listing then it is highly unlikely to be an oil painting, it most likely is a photo printed on canvas. Take a closer look at the outline of the flowers and you'll notice a softness of focus, characteristic of photography, a true oil painting w...

Re: Calendar art

Ed, are these all sports from your garden? Haven't seen them listed in the HL, they deserve to be there. I know Bill is in the middle of doing an update, why not send him pictures of all the sports you have that are 3 years and older and have them added to the HL for all to see.

Re: wind and sun

Best selections for full sun would be H. plantagenia or hybrids thereof. The wind factor is a concern though, wind tends to dry out the soil and this species requires moisture and extended, warm summers to flower and set seed well. Unless you are prepared to water regularly you might be best advised...
