Re: ID Challenge - 11 different forms - picture heavy!
Vein counts increase as the plant matures, so if you have a count of 13 now it will likely max out a little higher. VERY helpful, I did NOT realize that aspect of hostas! Explains why so many people have said that #8 is Erromena despite the vein counts being grossly different. For what it's worth, ...

Seed Timing and Viability - newb questions ;)
So guys, in my reading it has been alluded to that you can sow Hosta seeds without any rest. However, it seems most folks are sowing seeds in the dead of winter. I have also read that you can harvest seeds even while pods are green (generally a NECESSARY step when harvesting Orchids to prevent conta...

Re: ID Challenge - 11 different forms - picture heavy!
Switching gears a bit, I'm reexaming #10, the one that has seen at least 4 names applied including Tokudama, Elegans, Love Pat and Abiqua Drinking Gourd. I shot those REALLY high resolution, which allowed me to crop in on just a few leaves to give you all a much closer look. Here's that image: http:...

Chris, I got another strong ID that yes, these are Chokecherries. If I turn up DOA, it's cause we were all wrong!

Re: Must have "Broodstock" and other breeding questions...
Well Dave, I didn't pre-bloom any flowers at 2:00 AM, but I sure bet my neighbors thought I was a bit whacky out there with the flashlight! It's raining tonight, and obviously it will take some time to see if anything set. I *think* it was "too early"...i.e. no pollen available. So, looks like I'll b...

Are these Chokecherries?
Came with the house we bought. Early in the year a friend who knows his trees came through and thought they might be chokecherries. So far, I'm thinking he was right, but just want a few more opinions before I start eating 'em ;) http://www.cichlidrecipe.com/hostas_for_ID/P8100108.jpg http://www.cic...

Re: ID Challenge - 11 different forms - picture heavy!
Perhaps we'll get to see how they grow up next year, all in the same soil, same climate etc. Granted, if the observations are true (i.e. Gingko Craig sets pods) well then most certainly #2 is NOT Gingko Craig!!

Re: Must have "Broodstock" and other breeding questions...
Thanks Chris for all that info. A lot of it mirrors what I've been reading up on. Interestingly, I let one Gold Tiara flower this year, and it is loaded with pods. I may even have one pod that I intentionally set. I'm surprised it didn't get a mention. Also curious why, for a "species", all the lanc...

Re: ID Challenge - 11 different forms - picture heavy!
So...out and about this weekend I saw a plant that matched #8..the one we've only called Erromena, but it can't be due to vein counts. Of course, I've FORGOTTEN the name. I can only remember that it was a female human name..something like Julie or Sally or Joyce or something, and had 2 words in the ...

Re: Wierd 50/50 Leaf off Allan P. McConnell
Ah, your picture shows it whereas the Hosta Library pic is the general / normal look. Understood..throw random leaves like the one I found.
I suppose it's a matter of time before this bilateral leaf coloration ends up as a more stable variety in something!

Re: Wierd 50/50 Leaf off Allan P. McConnell
Really? Double Dutch? I took a quick look, it certainly doesn't show this bilateral coloration...kinda just looks like a gold standard? Am I looking at the right plant?

Re: Anyone else into hosta species
Interesting topic - I asked if anyone out there was breeding species in the seed forum recently. Being an orchid breeder in the past, I came to realize the value of the species...with the Orchid Registry (which appears much more "strict" and there's a lot more hybridizing...cultivars of specific spe...

Sad to hear such a statement..I really would love a hosta with 2-tone leaves like this. Are there ANY out there?

Re: Must have "Broodstock" and other breeding questions...
Trudy, lovely seedlings. Of course, I'd love to see stuff like that in my own some day. Thanks for a great first response! I too look forward to the responses of other Hosta Breeders! If I'm reading these recommendations + categories correctly, I assume the implication is that these broodstock sugge...

Re: Wierd 50/50 Leaf off Allan P. McConnell
True, but I have yet to find which of the 75+ growths of APMCC I have that actually threw this leaf off in the first place! If only I could get the leaf to root!ViolaAnn wrote:Seems to me, if you've got the energy to try to divide it off, you've got nothing to lose trying.

Re: ID Challenge - 11 different forms - picture heavy!
#1 - Does it remain that colour all season? 'Undulata', 'Undulata Mediopicta' and 'Undulata Mediovariegata' are really all the same, but they are likely to green up in the centre somewhat. I believe that 'Undulata Univittata' (which is what I've dubbed mine which was mislabelled as 'Joyce Trott' wh...

Re: Wierd 50/50 Leaf off Allan P. McConnell
Very interesting to know...what an insightful response. Yes, I realized we're nowhere near having a new plant yet (unless I go out tomorrow and see there's 3 or 4 growths like this). Curious though, knowing that Hostas can be tissue cultured, I makes me think about this leaf. In Orchids, they CAN ti...

Wierd 50/50 Leaf off Allan P. McConnell
I purchased 3 quart pots of Allan P. McConnell from our local grocery store...massive "tiny" plants...dividing 2 pots yielded almost 50+ growths, I kept one pot intact. I used the small growths to do a border on my wife's Lily Garden. Anyway, in all the frenzy of dividing, I noticed a tiny leaf on t...
