HVX in Europe
2 years ago I tried to warn people here in Switzerland. At 'Plant Protection' I had to explain what a Hosta is, the person never heard of it. At the Swiss Research Station and Horticultural College I talked to several people claiming to know about Hostas, but they never heard of HVX and seemed to sh...

I did have a look at the chicken fat post, sorry :bd: does nothing for me    In our mountain climate none of these crazy ruffled ones would ever open. Big Smile
Oh, wow! Big Smile really hit me! Just wonderful! My daylily obsession has been on and off, mostly because of our climate, definitely not suited for the modern dayliy. Ed, can you please tell me more about this beauty. Pia, where did you get yours? Just because of fear to import the rust, hav...

Ed, I grew some Japanese Iris in my former garden in Illinois but lost all but one. At the time I thought it had to be the soil, too alkaline. The last piece, a pretty white with lavender edge, was planted in my new garden. It did so well that I ordered more plants from Michigan and started seeds fr...

Half and Half
I have seen this occasionally on I. sibirica but just on falls. I have a Hemerocallis that does it too. This Hem, a cranberry red, will every so often produce a peach flower with a faint eye on the same scape with the reds. Unfortunately this happens not very often and on top of it, the plant is ste...

seed and pollen o.k.
Thank you Chris! good news indeed! As for Katherine Lewis, the plants look pretty bad, but somehow don't quite match the virus pictures. Earlier in the season Aristocrat looked about the same. I cut all 10 plants back and had them in pots under the roof. The new leafs are perfect. As of now, only 4 ...

Striptease
Richelle, like your Striptease, mine shows some lines on the 2004 plants. The 2003 plants still look better. They are in pots for the second year in my 'Virus Alert!' isolation area. Last year around this time, these plants looked a lot worse and leaves were tested by Dr. Lockhart. No virus was pres...

Tomato Ringspot Virus
What about Tomato ringspot virus? :bd: Although my samples sent to Dr. Lockhart last fall did not show any traces of HVX, my control sample was infected by tomato ringspot virus? The plants in question are still sitting in isolation but show no signs of disease and look healthy. 10 plants of Gypsy R...

So lovely indeed! Your's looks near white and I am wondering if I have the real thing. Mine is definitely bright yellow, but the shape of the flower is the same.

Gall midge
A small insect lays it eggs inside the bud. The buds are fat and coarse. If you pick the bud and open it, you will most likely find tiny worms inside. This has bee a terrible problem this year. I go around the garden every day with a bucket to remove the 'fat and ugly' buds. They go in the trash for...

Snow, your CJ ist just beautiful I love it and every year it is the first Tet to bloom.
As for your problem with deformed flowers, could it be that the gall midge has invaded your garden Over here in Europe this has become quite a problem.
will try to add a picture of an infected bud.

Aristocrat
We had several late frosts and then some hail recently, leaving Hostas look less than pretty. Aristocrat did not grow and look smaller than last year (received from Holland 04). Yesterday I dug all ten plants and planted them in a pot. The leaves looked so terrible, that I cut them down to 2 inches....

Thank you Chris! For now I can do nothing but wait and see. I received a batch of ten, just one eye per plant. Two of these have already reverted to all blue. They will be watched carefully.
