Re: Looking forward to spring, but worried about damage
More worried than ever now! A week+ of mid to upper 70s in March? We still have 2 months of frost risk. Warm weather is kind of bittersweet this early in the year.

Re: Looking forward to spring, but worried about damage
... walk the hill without doing the downhill mud slalom... Ha! I can picture this...funny. Do you have a lot of young seedlings out in the ground Mike? Fortunately, no. All mine were planted spring of last year, so they should be well established. The only plants that were moved later in the year w...

Looking forward to spring, but worried about damage
For years, I've noticed and asked about some hostas emerging with a complete lack of vigor, thick leathery leaves, and drastically reduced size and appearance. I've been told by a few that it's because of freezing and thawing of the ground with ice crystals injuring the crown of the plant. Well, it'...

Re: Hallson Gardens 2011 Get Together in Cement City, MI JUL
Hope everyone had a great time. Wish I could have made it, but had to stay home and take care of our dog recovering from surgery...plus she ate some trillium bulbs and got sick yesterday. Good grief! Next year!!

Re: Question about Christmas Tree Gala
Some people would say to chop it up now to force those to come up, though personally I would just let it do its thing. Ha! Beat me to it. If I was desperate to keep it streaked, Yes, I would cut it up and force the latent buds. Of course, that's years of commitment to keep the small divisions growi...

Looks great! Love the weigela bushes in your walk. They sure do shine at their time of the year.

New fenced in area, gardens ready for the warmth
I planned on fencing in the new area with T-posts, but hey, the 4x4s turned out to be cheaper and look better! I guess this can be called "Seedling Vault - The Sequel". I've got so many great seedlings in this area about 45''x80'. It's such a relief to no longer have to see browsing deer in this par...

Falling asleep for the winter
I'm beginning to hibernate. Days are shorter, colder, and grayer. Until my seeds come out of the freezer in a couple of months, I guess I'll try to enjoy the hostas outside as they start to shrivel. The were kind of neat to snap photos of today. Never really noticed beauty in a frozen, flopping, fro...

Re: Knock me over with a feather!
Hmmmm...is right. It really doesn't look like typical HVX symptoms to me, but it is certainly high on the suspicion chart. Of course, there are plants like 'Cynthia' that are splotched similarly, but are not HVX (or any virus) infected. I'm interested in the result of this one if you retest another ...

Re: Treating Southern Blight?
Specifically, I used a fungicide called Prostar. A little pricey, but it has cured my problem in both my hostas and daylilies.

Re: Anyone else into hosta species
I never actually started collecting them, but I've always been intrigued by them. My interest was sparked after seeing yingeri, pachyscapa, hypoleuca, longipes , and of course plantaginea . I actually dusted off Schmid's The Genus Hosta the other day and have been reading about all the species over ...
