Jeff,
To give you a simple answer like John's. It's the mixture of less light and cooler temps that start fall dormancy. Blooms have nothing to do with dormancy at all. A hosta doesn't need to bloom to go dormant.

Thanks Chris  I thought you had it disabled completely .. Once a email leaves our PC's it's out of our hands who gets it next and where it goes from there.. Whatever you do I'd SUGGEST to NEVER click on that unsubscribe link in a SPAM email. All your really doing is telling that SPAM program/s...

Chris, We all know 100% that you wouldn't do something like what was posted. Plus it was our option to show it and it wasn't yours, so not sure how your to blame. In the 5 years I've been here I've never once got a soliciting email from this site. I agree with Thy though. I'd rather have mine posted...

Hi Molly, I agree that discussion is great and how we learn from each other. But I also disagree to a extent of what others think at times also. I've seen these 8 plants get mowed "lawn boy with a 6.5 hp motor for the last 10 years " by myself for 20+ of those years with no effect to the plants...

I'm sending a open invitation for anyone to come and look at these 8 Lancifolia that have been mowed every year about mid summer for 30+ years and tell me if you can see a difference All 8 look the same as the one I have here that's never gotten mowed. These plants are at my dads place and were unde...

Hi Molly, The key words were before I knew what they were  ... I agree though that plants in general weren't made to be mowed "including grass" but they learn how to adapt to the conditions there put threw like this hosta did :-).. It did have smaller leafs but it continued to grow :D Some peo...

I use to mow a hosta once a week before I knew what they were and they still came back without a problem :-).. I'm sure I won't be the first to say this, but DG is no comparison to Hallsons. With minimal forums at Hallson and almost hitting 2000 members the ratio for members here is a lot higher the...

I can't go along with your regimen of abuse Yikes! I think you should build up the plant's self esteem by reading such stories as "The Little Engine That Could" and by offering rewards for every new little leaf it grows. For example, if it grows well you could pot it up and take it to visit various...

Take your chances with them outside and don't be the one to kill it under indoor lights. Giving the low lighting that indoor light provide you won't see any growth over the winter from these plants.

Thy, I'd dig it up and show it who's boss. Abuse the hosta and it will kick in a self defense mode. Treat it like a baby and it'll grow like a baby. I myself don't worry about damaging the roots here. I've ordered from plenty of nurseries that send plants with the roots cut and the plant always does...
