Andrea--It is not necessary to do the light 24/7. It just makes the seedlings grow much faster. Some folks use an automatic timer to turn on and off the lights. I believe it is true that once the seedlings get used to an on/off routine that you can not put them on 24/7. Of course, they will not be n...

Downside is that you have to order out a lot to get many.

The sacrifices we have to make to maintain our hostaholism.

The best bulbs to use are the cheap, regular light ones. You should be able to find some regular bulbs that would fit in your aquarium fixtures. The "grow light" ones are only needed if you are trying to produce blossoms, which you won't be doing with the hostas. Some of the seedlings may actually f...

HI--I have used clear plastic deli trays with a hinged cover to start the seeds. These are the kinds of containers that donuts or cookies might come in. They cost me about 10 cents each. With the cover closed you do not need to be concerned about mositure loss. After the seeds have germinated and st...

Another amateur opinion...since nematodes are tiny worms, it seems unlikely that slugs would spread them. Also, since slugs don't travel a great distance, if there are nems in a plant in their travel range, the nems are probably already also in the soil and in the adjoining plants.

Why not just use roundup?

Chris--Because of the concerns over spreading the virus when digging up an invected plant, why not just use Roundup and let the plant die in the ground? That would seem to eliminate the possiblity of contamination. My understanding is that the virus dies as soon as the plant is dead.

Pic of the Day--Lakeside Kaleidoscope

Hi All--I got Lakeside Kaleidoscope in 2001 and have it planted in a spot that might get an hour of direct sun. For the first three years in particular, I found the foliage to be attractive and interesting. That has been true for the last two years also but the the plant has started to lose its edge...

help IDing varieties??

I have a number of daylillies that I got before I concerned myself with keeping track of names. I do have photos and am wondering if anyone can come up with the names. Here are a few photos. Any help would be appreciated.

What I have been doing is cutting off an inch or two of stem below the "rosette" end where the new leaves will/are emeging from. I have been putting the cutting in damp potting soil. I also apply Rootone to the open wound so sterilize the cut. (I do that with just about everything I divide) So far, ...

Do you cut each stem into more than one piece? In the past I have only replanted the entire stem. (several hours later) :D I just finished potting up 24 divisions. I realized that some varieties, the ones I have divided in the past) have longer stems. Most of the varieties have shorter stems that wo...

heuchera/coral bell stem cuttings?

Has anyone had any experience taking stem cuttings of heucheras? I have divided them with good success but I seem to recall that one of the rhizome-like stems can be cut up into several pieces but I'm not sure of the best technique. Any help would be appreciated.
