Re: Question about Hosta 'Oshima Silk' parentage

Thank you for your kind advice, I am going to pot these up individually today. I think that they do have pycnophylla in their background. I understand what you are saying about the blue flowers. With that in mind, how would you explain H.'Gilt by Association' with "near blue" flowers and being pycno...

Re: Question about Hosta 'Oshima Silk' parentage

I also purchased an Oshima Silk from Chris last year and selfed one scape.I am attaching some pictures of the five seedlings that are the result of that selfing. They were sown on November 6, 2017 and as you can see they are very small (slow growing). I have no idea what the back ground may be.Keepi...

Just a couple of newer pictures.Out of the five in this cross, this is the one that has the most red pigment in the leaves, still a work in progress. :)

Another First Blush seedling

Last year I posted pictures of an open pollinated First Blush seedling, seed was obtained from Jim's Hostas. Last year I also posted "Seed search" looking for some seeds with a red flower genetic back ground and redcrx was generous enough to send me some, five packs in all. Among them were some H. "...

Re: Blue flower project

Yes, I also have Nightlife and have been trying to use it. I love the plant, but it is a reluctant breeder in my experience. Thank you for the input any suggestions and/or advice are appreciated.

Blue flower project

I have been working with blue-ish colored flowers for awhile, I had hopes of getting my hands on a division of H. "St. Bernadette", but it seems to be lost. In an attempt to produce a blue flowered hosta, With Chris' suggestion(that these were the bluest) I secured H. "Oshima Silk" from Chris and I ...

H. Evening Blush

I just wanted to share some pictures of what IMHO is an outstanding hosta. I apologize for the small plant and substandard photo's, I am using/attempting to use this hosta in my red flower hybridizing program. I should have taken the pictures before I started pollinating and removing the corolla and...

Re: Empress Wu seedlings

Just wanted to update this post, I had two plants blooming this year. One more has a scape with buds presently. I have posted pictures of the first two. One has "normal' flower with fragrance, but the second one has unusual flowers. The flower tepals (there are only four) are fused at the tips, the ...

According to the Hosta Library sports are Dreamliner, Empress Wu streaked, Kingsday, Kingsize, Super Ego and Wunderbar. I have no idea where these could be obtained.

Re: Pic of the Day--fortunei albopicta

I am not sure if this post belongs here. I just saw this today and went out and took some pictures of my H. 'Elizabeth Campbell'. It is a 'Fortunei Albopicta' selection. I didn't take any pictures earlier and I regret it now, but as The Hosta Library states "The color holds well.". It isn't pretty a...

Re: First Blush Seedling

I took a couple of pictures of the newly opened flowers this morning. As you can see red, pink and lavender can be to hard to distinguish.I think this was mainly due to the light. The first picture is the most accurate to my eye. This is why flower color is so elusive.

Re: First Blush Seedling

This is a picture of the flower scape of the First Blush seedling in this thread. The flower is not intact as I had already started to pollinate before I remembered this thread. As you can see I have removed some to all of the tepals. No need to remove the stamens because there is little to no polle...

Re: Question about Hosta 'Oshima Silk' parentage

Thanks Chris, that is very helpful. It doesn't mean that I won't use it in my breeding plan, but it will help me to make correct decisions on what direction I go.

Question about Hosta 'Oshima Silk' parentage

Chris, I am sorry for the delay but when talking about "Oshima Silk" you said "long story about that one, but the plant tissue cultured and sold as Oshima Silk wasn't the same plant that was registered" I would be interested in any details of that long story that may be pertinent to my using this ho...

Re: Pic of the Day--Purple Haze

I planted mine last fall, and here are a couple of pic's that show the "Purple Haze" color that will rapidly leave with the onset of higher temperatures. We are supposed to get to 80 + this week. So I took these today. If you look closely you can see the color up the petiole and into the base of the...

Re: Mito-No-Hana question

Hi Barbara, if you are still on the forum. I just stumbled on this post so I will answer the question for anyone that would like to know. The"lighter veins" are a springtime occurrence, on a yellow leaf. Not only do the lighter veins disappear but the plant is viridescent and becomes all green as th...

First Blush Seedling

Here are some pictures of an open pollinated First Blush seedling. I purchased the seeds from Jim's Hostas and they were planted December 19, 2016. The first leaves were just green with red petioles, however the last leaf to unfurl has quite a bit of red on the underside of the leaf tip. It does sho...

Re: My oldest 2016 seedlings

Just an update, two photos of the beginning of a flower scape on one of the hostas (Curly Fries X OP) in my original picture posted to this thread. So a few more weeks and then I can evaluate the flower and decide if I keep it or not.

Re: My oldest 2016 seedlings

Yes. :D I am working on all of these to one degree or another, I just have to sort them out into each category and go from there. I have been working with plantaginea for years, but it has it's own pitfalls, for example low germination rates and very low if any seed set after f1. I just bought the h...
