Homer, did your Sagae die or are you just saying that it looks ugly? I had a chance to look it over, and it appears that it is just very ugly--no rot at all (knock wood). The leaves are just horrible, and not even partially unfurled. Unfortunately, my Liberty (planted last year) may not make it, an...

Thanks for the link, Homer! I read the posts and it is very helpful. I am even more excited about getting into spring, now, as I have alot of blue and dark hostas...it will be fun to see what happens. Question: If you use a fertilizer such as Miracle Grow (which I don't) or Algoflash (which I do so...

https://www.perennialreference.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=342621&highlight=#342621 Above is a discussion on using Epsom salts where I talk about how I use it. In the wet spring, I usually just sprinkle a ring around each plant, and it will kill slugs until the rains come and water it into the ground...

It's good to see you again, Renaldo! I just took two trips around my gardens today, and things do not look good. :x Maybe I'll just pretend spring isn't coming around for a few more weeks, and then we can see how things look. Sagae is toast this year, and both of them were coming up with over 20 eye...

We had a week of weather back in March where daytime highs were near or above 80, and nights in the 60's, along with plenty of rain. Follow that with two weeks of highs in the 30's and lows in the teens, and it's going to be an ugly hosta year for me. :x I was lucky that some of the slow ones did no...

Oh my, Pia! I knew using it was supposed to make the dark ones darker, but I didn't think it would do anything to the white ones! What a surprise! :o Epsom salts (magnesium sulfate) simply supplies magnesium to your plants--one of the limiting reagents in the plant's process of producing chlorophyl...

I got a few in trades a few years ago, and have really enjoyed them and all their little seedlings. I am really looking hard at a variety called 'Hocus Pocus,' with deeply divided red foliage. Does anyone have experience with this one? It's a bit on the expensive side, so I'm thinking twice before b...

Alexa, I love the pics. I have all sorts of Columbine seedlings, but none look as good as yours. All mine are the wild type with red flowers. I have one "Winky's Rose" that I hope will set seed this year and have some interesting seedlings around.

I really like the black one. Very cool!

Andi, It's good to see your pitcher plant bog growing so well. I remember talking to you about 2-3 years ago when I was planning my bog. I am in Zone 5, and have left my pitcher plants out all winter for 3 winters now, with no losses. Most recommend mulching heavily, but I have not even done that. I...

Re: May I ask?

I've used a similar method for mulberry trees (I hate those things, too). I just moved into a home with a mulberry in the backyard, right over the patio. It's a mess. Did you deal with one? Any suggestions? Thanks, s. Nope, I didn't deal with one, I've killed about 4 . . . but only 2 were of any si...

I bought Palace Purple as my first Heuchera in 2003, and Lime Rickey and Amber Waves in 2004 as my next two Heuchera. Both LR and AW were probably sold to me far too young, and they were in pint-sized containers. I really didn't have a clue as to what I was doing, as I, too, thought that Heuchera we...

Designing a Solar Greenhouse . . . suggestions?

Okay, I have gotten the go-ahead from my wife, and have been reading The Solar Greenhouse Book by McCullagh. I have decided to make a pit greenhouse 10' x 16' with southern glazing only (twin wall polycarb seems pretty cost effective, with vinyl sheet on the inside), and earth berm on the north wall...

I had no grand illusions regarding whether it was a true blue or not, but the pic does look like a nice Stella d' Oro with most of the flower comprising a dark purple. I had no idea daylilies came in that color, and this one supposedly reblooms! I have very little info on this one, and was hoping th...

Blue Olive Bailey Langdon?

Does anyone have this one? I couldn't resist when Wally World had a bag of 3 roots for sale for $1. The picture on the bag looks incredible, so I was wondering if it's too good to be true. I know I probably won't see any blooms until next year, but they are sprouting nicely right now.

I have three of these: one that is just now starting to put up new growth for the year; another one has been growing well for about a month now, and a third one that still shows no signs of waking up. I don't give up on these until mid-June, as it takes some time for these to pop up. Should I be cov...

My Moonlight Treasure is really taking off here, and did just fine over the winter. I had a few yellow flowers last year, but I'm really hoping for a nice display this year. Mine was sold to me last year as a very small plant (probably just a few months out of TC), and I planted it in about 4" of co...

Tricyrtis Samurai Question

I remember Chris saying something about this one being a dud the second season that you have it , but then coming up gangbusters the following year. Well, mine is a super dud right now. I'm just wondering whether it is such a dud that I should replant it elsewhere. It came back with two "stalks": ea...
