Re: Hostas a poppin' & the cable guy comes a squashin'
Thanks Dr. Dave and Jim! Just one more question, because it's not self evident to me. Should I wait for the eyes to unfurl before I peel the shredded leaves away? Jim, great idea, wish I'd thought of that. I was so upset with the guy in general I didn't think to mention the smooshing of the hosta wh...

Hostas a poppin' & the cable guy comes a squashin'
Finally broke down and had cable tv installed at the house. Those digital converter boxes just don't work, time to get with the 21st century. Anyway, I was outside with the cable guy and as we walked around the house I could see all of the hostas eyes popping out of the ground (it was a fabulous sit...

Re: The Auction
Hi Lucy, Didn't have time to check the auction out this go around. Those were some awesome offerings and phenomonal bids! Question...I noticed that there are still some items listed, are they also to benefit the AHS? Just curious. Oh and thought I'd point out that there's only 45 days until the firs...

Linda I love your gardens. Thanks for a bit of green on a cold winter day. Hard to believe that in a few months everything will be popping up out of the ground and unfurling!! And I love your fairy house, what a cute idea!

Re: Pollinating...how late?
Hi, This was discussed in another forum last year. The ratio of water/sugar is: 1 teaspoon of sugar to 4 ounces of water. You can even cut the scape, put it in the sugar water while they're blooming, pollinate the flowers indoors, and then leave the scapes in the sugar water for a few months while t...

Re: So what are you doing in your hosta gardens these days?
I've been watering and doing some planting. I'm praying for some rain from hurricane Hannah to come our way, then all I have to do is plant, LOL. Went to a garden center with my DBF last weekend thinking hosta, but ended up buying three dinner plate hibiscus, a yellow cone flower, an old fashioned s...

The Bayer product sounds great. Is it toxic to people and pets? Just wondering if I'm going to contaminate my well and kill my cat if I use it.

Wish I were closer Jim, I'd have a bunch to donate to your sale. Not just hostas, but columbine, butterfly bushes and tall phlox as well. They reseed like weeds in my yard. You need to start showing pics of your holding beds. What an inspiration that would be to downsize.

Re: Nematodes..Guess I'll start it this year
Jim, if I were soaking a less bulky (?) plant I'd probably use the 10% ratio. I dig up the iris clump, divide it, toss the mushy parts, trim the leaves down to 4 inches or so, knock off the dirt, drop them into the solution and leave them there for a few hours. Then I take them out, rinse well with ...

Re: What turned out to be your best newer hostas this year?
Bought a bunch of hostas last year at a hosta show, and of them I'm really enjoying Journey's End, Sea Gulf Stream and Miss American Pie (love the long leaf form, its actually the only one I have like that).

You're right Mary Ann, thanks. I should have stated a 20% solution for soaking the irises. Thanks!

Re: Nematodes..Guess I'll start it this year
I don't worry about the potency of the solution as much as the ratio. I simply add one part belach to 9 parts water (for a 10% solution). Keep it in a covered bucket in a cool spot. If you can't smell the bleach after a day or two, its time to dump it and mix up a new batch. Great for sterilizing to...

Re: Nematodes..Guess I'll start it this year
I had posted a thread in another forum last year containing a recipe for a homemade insecticidal soap soultion that I'd concoted using Dr. Bronner's liquid soap, a generic mint flavored antiseptic mouthwash and powdered garlic in water. I'd add it to a pump sprayer and douse my hostas once a week th...

Re: Sawdust on hosta beds
The only thing that would concern me would be the remnants of the floor's previous finish, not the wood. I don't know how the varnish, oil, polyurethane or whatever they used would break down in your garden. Just a thought.
