Re: Purple Clematis ID, please.

look at the website www.silverstarvinery.com.

Deb has lots of photos on there and lots of variety....maybe it would help you identify it....also a great place to buy when you get settled in to your new home.

Re: Calling Dr. Lockhart, please....

They look enough like virus that it makes me really nervous. I tested them again with Agdia tests for HVX, (test kit is one year out of "fresh") but definite control lines and no HVX line. I can't just "watch" them for awhile....my guineas have taken to intermittently munching on hosta leaves, and c...

Re: A Pileated Woodpecker in Central NY!

We had one, or a pair, not sure....come thru last spring. First time ever here in Eastern Kansas.

Amazing! As you say...you can hear them excavating from a long way.

Didn't see them this year....

Calling Dr. Lockhart, please....

HI, Chris - I have a few seedlings in my garden that look 'weird' this year - they look like HVX, but it would be HIGHLY UNLIKELY out of all the hostas I have that these would be infected. The seeds came from a reliable source, and they went right into the gardens from the seed trays - into a brand ...

Can't tell for sure, but it looks like it is sporting to a streaked leaf.

Is it damaged? Or just coloration? Not HVX, I don't think.

Re: Beginning 2011 season

Oh, that sounds awful! Have you tried a fogger? I don't know where you would get one, but I've seen the City fogging in town when the mosquitoes are really bad. I'm remembering now that hubby used one about 20 years ago when we had these weird worms attack our walnut trees. I don't remember whether ...

Re: Greenhouse heating alternatives

Thought I'd post an update to this. Gardentoad, I took your advice and ordered the plug-in thermostats from Amazon. That was the only place I could find them, BTW. They worked beautifully! I set them on 50 on 2 of my heaters. (One heater on each end of the greenhouse to keep the temps more even.) Th...

Re: Hostas in Pots.....what next

Part of the problem with watering them when they're indoors is that they're not getting any sunlight, or at least not adequate sunlight. I would be more inclined to move them outdoors and protect them from getting too much water. If the crown sits in water/ice, you run the risk of rotting the crown...

Re: My little Gracie....

Thanks to all of you. It is comforting to have a place where others understand what it means to lose a beloved pet. I'm so very grateful for all your support. As we all know, we'll be okay....it's just still at that stage where it is so hard to walk by an empty pen, quiet doghouse, etc. Grace was a ...

My little Gracie....

Hello, my Hallson friends, I needed a shoulder to cry on even if it is just in a post.... It's 3:30 a.m. and I just got home from the emergency veterinary where I had to put my sweet Rottie, Grace, down. I'm soooo sad..... Earlier this evening, around 10:45 p.m. I was awakened to her shifting around...

Re: Does Preen work?

I'm with Viktoria on this, with the Treflan. It is much less expensive than Preen and does indeed work very well, much better than Preen in my opinion. I use the granular and just dust it over my hosta beds. You must make sure you wait until you have all your mulch down, or whatever you are going to...

not a problem...if a seedling hasn't gone dormant, it can be kept growing thru at least one dormant season

Re: Too early to start seeds?

hI, lykaon78 - It's never too early or too late to start hosta seeds. It just depends on what type of growing set-up you have. If you start seeds now, the question is will you have accommodations for large seedlings inside before it is warm enough to set them out in the spring? Depending on the vari...

Re: Excited about growing Hosta from seed - Newbie

Bottom watering is best. No need to mist if you have them covered. The humidity stays just fine, if the soil is moist from bottom watering. It is the roots that need the water. Just be sure they aren't too soggy for extended periods.

Most important thing....
