The very first plants I bought for my garden were three Regal Spendor Hostas. I just love how fast they have grown (well, 2 of the 3), and how they seem to take the least amount of slug damage in the whole garden. They are particularly pretty in the early summer, when the vase shape is so pronounced...

I tried beer and didn't catch a single slug over several nights. So I took the wasted beer saucers and tossed them into a 5 gallon bucket...had several inches of beer in there. After a heavy rain, I walked around and collected slugs, tossing them in there. They were able to crawl right back out! So ...

Thanks, Frodo. I'm pretty much just getting started with gardening and hostas, and I'm really eager for the ones I planted over the last few years to get some size to them...the idea that they can actually de crease is so depressing. I really want to put a new hosta bed on the north side of our hous...

Frodo, when you move a larger hosta into the shade, does it continue to look nice and large in the next seasons, as it comes up? I moved Big Daddy into one of my deeper shade pockets from a sunnier spot that it was planted early last summer. I moved it at the beginning of this summer, and was really...

Two summers ago I had only three. Last summer that went up to 14, and I think I probably put a couple dozen in this summer. I think I'm between 30-40..and sadly, I think I'm out of room! I'd love to have the space for more.

Ann, I may try that next year. How often do you do that, and it doesn't affect the soil or the plant? Do you think a lot of them hide out near the bases of plants? I guess the nice thing about the baits- either metaldehyde or iron phospate is that you don't have to catch them in the act...eventually...

I know, I have also heard that the metaldehyde work much better. Unfortunately, I'd never be able to fogive myself if I used it and then my dogs got into it. They are small dogs, and even though I have most of my hostas fenced off, they can get in there with a simple hop if they choose. Part of the ...

Yes, I noticed the holes starting up about a month ago when I went to inspect some flopped over leaves. I used little sticks to try to support the leaves just to hold them up because except for gaping holes in the stems, they were fine. I'm vast relieved it's not Southern Blight...I don't see any wh...

Hi everyone- I'm new here and the owner of the "holey" hostas that Molly so kindly posted for me. I was very interested to read that many of you think it is slugs, as I also thought they only ate the leaves. I admit that I have slacked off on Sluggo duty over the past weeks/month, and I have lots of...
