What's best for the Shadiest spot?
Which hostas grow best for you guys in a lot of shade? It will get a few hours morning sun then is shaded by a couple trees and the new fence the neighbor put up. I dug everything out of there last year but somehow some ferns, a bunch of bulbs the squirrels must have planted and some wild phlox have...

Hi Jim! I bought a Gunsmoke TC maybe 4 years ago and it just poked along, but this year it's about 20" wide & really looking cool! Darn, I planted it by the driveway so I doubt if it will throw any seeds where they can grow. I still think this is a glorious growth year as many of my hostas that have...

Thanks everyone for the advice & encouragement. Sue, I have a giant S/S that needs moved too, but I think I may move the ones around it. How heavy are those rootballs? I remember moving a whole Lancifolia one time and I dragged it on a tarp too. I almost broke my back & huffed & puffed! It was only ...

Does moving hostas mean a set back?
How much does digging up the whole clump & moving it whole set it back? Will it be smaller next year? How bout digging the whole clump up & cutting off a tiny bit on the side. Will that set it back? I have a bed with Zounds, GE, empty space in back then in front Swoosh getting covered up by Zounds, ...

Debbie, sorry it took so long to answer you. I used Disease Control for Roses, Flowers & Shrubs. I got it at Lowes, Menards or Meijers not sure where. Walmart doesn't carry it. Pia, the straight line in one bed is due to the southern stem blight. It travels across the soil, and seems to be in a perf...

A nursery owner just told me I could mow the LOV down & control it that way. Since it's in my perennial beds I don't think I'll be mowing but I could cut it. Somehow I just don't think that will work. I trampled a big spot of it when I was pulling out another thug, Gooseneck Loosestrife, and so far ...

Need advice
I left several hostas in pots over the winter & quite a few had eyes emerge weeks ago, but have not leafed out. I took some out of the pots and inspected the roots. Some had crown rot, others did not. I put the ones with rot in bleach water & repotted but they still haven't started growingl Would yo...

Lucy, I learned my lesson just digging in to the hostas to take off a "side" chunk. I almost killed a gorgeous hosta that was over 3' wide and it's taken ten years to fully recuperate and get to it's former size. I must've broken it's heart when I dug into it! Renaldo, I agree June is one gorg...

I sent you a pm, hope I'm not too late! I've missed the last 2 years due to computer problems and it has been SO STRESSFUL knowing how much fun I was missing out on. I even went to the library to use their compuers to check last summer to see what everyone got. At least I got some enjoyment from you...

A fix for Southern stem blight?
Remember me crying about my hosta bed that had everything in a straight line die? I thought a gas line broke under it or something strange for it to have this straight line of hostas die. I didn't plant a straight lne, I'm just saying this random straight line sliced thru the bed & killed everything...

Well,... I went out there today & seems the goose neck loosestrife has taken over the lily of the valley! Now I have two headaches! And now I have to deal with hosta overlap too! Some of my babies decided to explode this year & are going to cover their neighbors if I don't intercede! If I just...

Thanks for the tips! Have you seen this blow up plastic ring you put water in that fits around the tree? It soaks out slowly. I thought it was a good idea till I saw the price around $30! My neighbors have a big JM & it usually throws a few seedlings in my yard each year. This year there are thousan...

Yes I do have Sweet Autumn & I knew it self seeded coz I have found quite a few of them around the original. But these others have different leaves. The President was back there but I don't see the original plant coming up. My original SA is around my gazebo on the north side. Today I noticed a mayb...

Wild Clematis?
Have you ever had volunteer clematis? The last 2 or 3 years I've found them coming up in different locations. At first I thought it was some I'd bought by the flat really cheap at an end of the year sale and had desperately planted where ever I found an empty patch of ground, but this year there are...
